Virtual Job Tryout (VJT): What It Is and What to Expect

A Virtual Job Tryout (VJT) is an online job simulation from HireVue. It began at Shaker, which became Modern Hire, which HireVue bought in 2023. You preview the job, handle customer and coworker scenarios, do a short job task like checking data, answer questions about your background, and pick work-style statements. CVS, AT&T and Capital One use it, and most versions take under an hour. OphyAI Customer Service helps on the scenario, work-style, video and written parts, live and in practice.

Virtual Job Tryout at a glance

From HireVue's own pages and help center, and the VJT guides and FAQs that AT&T, CVS and Capital One publish, checked November 6, 2026. Each employer builds its own version, so your invitation wins if it says something different.

Who makes itHireVue. The VJT began at Shaker, which merged with Montage in 2019 to form Modern Hire. HireVue bought Modern Hire in May 2023.
What it isA realistic job preview plus job simulations and questions about you, built for a specific role
Common sectionsCustomer and coworker scenarios, a job task (checking data, monitoring calls or a business case), your background, and work-style statements
How longCapital One: 20-45 minutes on average. AT&T: block 25-55 minutes, depending on the role.
Timed?Mostly untimed. AT&T's call center version times only its call-monitoring section.
Going backAT&T's scenario sections do not let you skip ahead or review earlier answers
DevicesHireVue says phones, tablets and computers work. AT&T's older customer service version required a computer.
ResultsGo to the employer. HireVue is not involved in hiring decisions; employers can set a score that moves you forward automatically.
RetakesOnly through the employer, not HireVue. AT&T lets you retake after six months.
Employers that say they use itCVS Health (many high-volume roles), AT&T (call center, retail, sales, technician) and Capital One. HireVue names Delta Air Lines as a customer.

Virtual Job Tryout question types

Each employer picks the sections for its role, so your VJT may have three, four or five of these. Names in quotes are the module titles Capital One and AT&T use.

Realistic job preview

Short videos, audio clips or slides that show a day in the job: the customers, the pace and the hard parts. HireVue says previews let candidates decide whether the job is right for them.

Tip: Watch closely and use headphones. The preview tells you what the employer values, and the VJT plays audio on each page automatically.

Scenarios ("Manage Relationships")

A customer or coworker situation with four plausible responses. You pick the one you would most likely do and the one you would least likely do.

Tip: Find the clearly bad option first: blaming, arguing, ignoring the problem or breaking a rule. Then choose between the two best.

Job task simulation

A task from the job: verifying caller details while you listen to calls and watch a satisfaction meter, checking shelf labels against product data with Match or Error, or answering questions from a fictional business case.

Tip: Work quickly but check every field. One swapped digit makes a line an error, and AT&T lets you replay call audio as often as you need.

"Tell Us Your Story" (background)

Questions about your work history, such as how long you have done a kind of task. AT&T's example: 2.5 years of phone troubleshooting means picking 1 to 3 years.

Tip: Answer with the facts of your own history. Have your past job dates handy before you start.

"Describe Your Approach" (work style)

Pairs of statements where you pick the one most like you. Both sides describe a reasonable way to work.

Tip: Go with your first honest reaction, as AT&T advises, and keep your choices consistent across similar pairs.

Recorded video questions

Some employers place the VJT inside a HireVue on-demand video interview, so you may also record short spoken answers before or after the assessment.

Tip: Prepare two or three short stories about helping a customer or fixing a problem, each with a clear action and result.

Virtual Job Tryout example questions and answers

Six examples written by us in the styles a VJT uses. None are from a real VJT or any employer. Try each one before you read the answer.

Example 1 · Most and least likely

Call center. A caller says his internet has dropped three times this week and he wants to cancel. Your screen shows a known outage in his area that will be fixed today. You can give outage credits.

Pick the response you would most likely and least likely give.

  1. AProcess the cancellation right away, since that is what he asked for.
  2. BApologize, explain the outage and when it will be fixed, and offer a credit for the lost days.
  3. CTell him outages happen with every provider.
  4. DTransfer him to the cancellations team without explaining why.

Most likely: B. Least likely: C.

B gives him the real reason, a timeline and something for his trouble, which is often enough to keep a customer. C brushes off a real problem. A follows the request but ignores the fix you know about, and D hands him off cold.

Example 2 · Match or Error (job task)

Retail inventory check. Shelf label: "Wireless Earbuds X2, Black, SKU 40418, $49.99". Product record: "Wireless Earbuds X2, Black, SKU 40481, $49.99".

Does the label match the record?

  1. AMatch
  2. BError

Error.

The last two digits of the SKU are swapped: 40418 vs 40481. These tasks reward checking each field character by character instead of reading the line at a glance. OphyAI Customer Service does not do these checking tasks, so practice them yourself.

Example 3 · Most and least likely

Retail store, sales. A customer comparing two phone plans asks which is cheaper. The cheaper plan has no hotspot, and earlier he mentioned he uses a hotspot for work every day.

Pick the response you would most likely and least likely give.

  1. ARecommend the cheaper plan, since that is what he asked about.
  2. BPoint out that the cheaper plan has no hotspot and ask how much he relies on it before you recommend one.
  3. CRecommend the most expensive plan to be safe.
  4. DTell him to read the plan details online and decide for himself.

Most likely: B. Least likely: D.

B finds the real need before recommending, which protects the customer and the sale. D sends him away with the problem. A answers the literal question but sets him up for a surprise, and C oversells.

Example 4 · Most and least likely (coworker)

A coworker asks you to cover the last hour of her shift so she can leave early. Your team lead has said every shift swap must be approved in the scheduling app.

Pick the response you would most likely and least likely give.

  1. AAgree, and keep it between the two of you.
  2. BSay you are happy to cover once she gets the swap approved in the app.
  3. CRefuse, and tell the team lead she tried to leave early.
  4. DSay no without giving a reason.

Most likely: B. Least likely: A.

B helps a teammate inside the rule. A breaks a clear scheduling rule, and if something goes wrong you are both exposed. C turns an easy request into a conflict, and D is allowed but unhelpful.

Example 5 · Work style (paired statements)

Pick the statement that is most like you.

  1. AI would rather finish one customer's issue completely before I take the next one.
  2. BI would rather help as many customers as I can, even if some issues need a follow-up.

No single keyed answer. Pick the one that is true for you and stay consistent with similar pairs.

Paired statements set two reasonable styles against each other, so there is no obvious good choice. Your pattern across many pairs is compared with the job. AT&T advises going with your first reaction.

Example 6 · Recorded video answer

Video question: "Tell us about a time you turned an unhappy customer around." You will record your answer on camera.

Which answer outline is strongest?

  1. ASay that you always stay positive and customers like you.
  2. BDescribe a wrong order on a busy Saturday, how you apologized and fixed it on the spot, and that the customer came back the next week.
  3. CDescribe a rude customer and how you reported them to your manager.

Strongest: B.

B is a short, specific story with a clear action and result. A is a claim with no example, and C makes the story about the problem instead of what you did. OphyAI Customer Service gives you a short script like B when the test records a video answer.

How the Virtual Job Tryout is scored

HireVue does not publish a VJT scoring formula. Each section measures something different: judgment in the scenarios, speed and accuracy on the job task, and how your background and work style fit the role. The employer uses the results to decide who moves on, and in HireVue it can set a minimum score that advances candidates automatically (HireVue's own example is a score of 3 or more).

The scenario sections work like a situational judgment test, which is usually scored against a key set by people who know the job. Work-style and background answers have no right answer; they are compared with what the role needs. AT&T says there are no specific materials to study and that candid answers give the best fit.

Results go to the employer, not to you. HireVue says it notifies the recruiter as soon as you finish and is not involved in hiring decisions. Some employers turn on a HireVue candidate feedback report that is emailed after you finish, but most candidates hear about next steps rather than see a score. CVS says its recruiters cannot give individual feedback.

How to prepare for the Virtual Job Tryout

  1. Step 1

    Read your employer's VJT instructions

CVS launches the VJT from a task on your Workday Candidate Home page, and Capital One sends a Workday task with a PDF link. AT&T publishes a free study guide for each of its tryouts. Check the deadline in your invitation, which can take up to 48 hours to arrive.

  2. Step 2

Treat the job preview as a briefing

The preview shows what a good day looks like for the employer. Note the customers, the rules and the pace, because the scenarios that follow are built around them.

  3. Step 3

    Practice scenario judgment

The best answers stay calm, show care, own the problem, follow the policy and escalate only what needs a manager. Work through the examples above and on our situational judgment test guide.

  4. Step 4

Slow down on the job task

Checking and call-monitoring tasks reward accuracy. Use headphones, replay audio when the test lets you, and compare every character before you choose Match or Error.

  5. Step 5

    Set up for one sitting

Use a reliable connection and finish in one go, as AT&T advises. HireVue recommends Chrome; if a phone shows a "use a larger device" error, switch to a laptop or desktop.

Is the Virtual Job Tryout timed, monitored or recorded?

Most VJTs are taken online, at a time and place you choose, and most sections are untimed. AT&T's call center version times only its call-monitoring section, and its scenario sections do not let you skip ahead or change earlier answers. None of the VJT guides or HireVue pages we read describe a webcam or live proctor for the VJT itself.

Video comes in when the employer pairs the VJT with a HireVue on-demand video interview. HireVue says video and voice answers are recorded, used to transcribe your responses and kept no more than 3 years, and that you are told when AI scoring is used and can opt out. Deadlines and retakes belong to the employer: HireVue cannot extend an expired invitation or reset a VJT, and AT&T lets you retake after six months.

Virtual Job Tryout answers, AI help and cheating

Are there Virtual Job Tryout answers online?

Not real ones. Each employer's VJT is built for its own role, HireVue and employers do not publish answer keys, and the work-style and background sections have no right answer. What you can learn is the judgment the scenarios reward, which the examples above teach. On the live VJT, OphyAI Customer Service reads each scenario on your screen and shows the best answer.

Can AI help on a Virtual Job Tryout?

Yes, on the scenario, work-style, video and written parts. OphyAI Customer Service shows the most and least likely response, keeps work-style answers consistent, scripts recorded video answers and drafts chat and email replies. It does not do the typing, data-checking, call-monitoring or math parts.

Can a Virtual Job Tryout tell if you use AI?

The VJT guides and HireVue pages we read do not describe webcam monitoring for the VJT itself. If your VJT sits inside a HireVue video interview, those answers are recorded and transcribed, and sections that do not let you go back mean you answer each screen once. In the desktop app, OphyAI's answers show in a popup that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording. It does not work inside lockdown or proctored browsers, it does not take typing-speed tests, and hiding a window from screen share does not hide it from a webcam, a person in the room, or proctoring software.

OphyAI Customer Service and the Virtual Job Tryout

OphyAI Customer Service reads each question of an online customer service assessment on your screen and shows the best answer in a small window only you can see. Practice mode gives you realistic mock tests that explain why each option is better or worse.

OphyAI Customer Service fits the judgment parts of a VJT, live and in practice. Share the test tab once in Chrome or Edge on a computer, or run it in the OphyAI desktop app for Mac and Windows. It reads each scenario as it appears and shows the best answer in seconds: the most and least likely response, a rating or a ranking. It keeps work-style answers consistent, gives you a short script when the test records a video answer, writes ready-to-paste replies for chat and email tasks, and in the desktop app Listen picks up customer clips the test plays.

It is not built for every VJT section. Typing or data-entry speed, Match or Error checks, call-monitoring tasks, and math or cognitive questions are not what Customer Service answers, and background questions are about your own work history. It is not in the iPhone or Android apps, so open your VJT link on a computer to use it. To practice first, try the free 3-question sample with a free account.

Virtual Job Tryout questions

A Virtual Job Tryout is a HireVue assessment that lets you try out a job before you are hired. It mixes a realistic job preview, scenarios, a short job task, background questions and work-style statements. AT&T calls its versions "simulation-based" assessments that include "job simulations and questions about you."

Usually under an hour. Capital One says 20-45 minutes on average. AT&T asks you to block 25-55 minutes depending on the role, and its older customer service version asked for 1 hour 30 minutes.

Usually not a score. Results go to the employer, and HireVue says the recruiter decides next steps. Some employers turn on a HireVue feedback report that is emailed after you finish. CVS says recruiters cannot give individual feedback.

Only if the employer approves it. HireVue says it cannot reset or reissue a VJT itself, even after a technical problem; the company you applied to has to process the request. AT&T lets candidates who did not qualify retake after six months.

Usually yes: HireVue says phones, tablets and computers work, and AT&T's newer guides list phones. Some tasks are easier on a bigger screen, and HireVue suggests a laptop or desktop if you see a "use a larger device" error. OphyAI Customer Service needs a computer.

A VJT that Capital One sends for some roles through Workday. Its modules are Manage Relationships (scenarios), Work Your Business Case (information about a fictional business), Tell Us Your Story (background) and Describe Your Approach (work style). Capital One says it takes 20-45 minutes on average.

CVS Health uses the VJT for many high-volume roles and says it screens over a million applicants a year. If your role needs one, you launch it from a task on your Workday Candidate Home page after you apply. CVS sends VJT technical questions to HireVue's candidate help center.

Not by that name today. HireVue names Delta Air Lines as a Modern Hire customer, and a 2023 trade report described a VJT step in flight attendant hiring. Delta's own flight attendant page, checked November 6, 2026, does not name a VJT. It lists a MakiPeople candidate assessment, a Fitme values assessment and a HireVue on-demand interview instead.

It is the values assessment in Delta's flight attendant hiring. Delta's page, checked November 6, 2026, lists the steps in order: an AI-powered candidate assessment from MakiPeople, a short values assessment from Fitme, then a recorded HireVue on-demand interview for candidates who pass Fitme, then an in-person Event Day in Atlanta. One candidate on Reddit described Fitme as choosing the statements that best describe you (candidate report). Delta says unsuccessful candidates may reapply six months after they are disqualified, once a new posting opens.
