Home Depot Assessment Test: What It Asks and How to Answer

Store roles get 11 short video scenarios, where you pick what you would most and least likely do, plus 16 multiple-choice work style questions. Supply chain roles get 8 and 10. It takes about 20 minutes, with 96 hours to finish. If you are selected, Home Depot contacts you for an interview. OphyAI Customer Service helps live or in practice.

Home Depot assessment question types

Home Depot describes two question formats on its assessment page and shows a sample screen of each. Here is what each one looks like and what it measures, in our words.

Video scenarios (most and least likely)

A short video shows a moment in the store or warehouse, with sound and captions. Four possible responses follow, and you mark the one you would most likely do and the one you would least likely do.

Tip: Watch the whole clip first. The strongest pick usually solves the problem now, follows your training and keeps your supervisor in the loop. The weakest one ignores, delays or passes off the problem.

Fits you best (multiple choice)

A short question about how you work, such as how you stay careful on a task, with five answers that are all reasonable. You pick the one that fits you best. Home Depot says you can think of school or volunteer work.

Tip: Pick the answer that is careful and steady without going to an extreme, like double-checking everything or not worrying at all. Answer similar questions the same way.

What your manager would say

Some questions ask how your most recent manager would rate you, for example on how fast you respond to customers. A 2024 candidate also mentions questions on being late compared with others.

Tip: Answer as your manager would on a good, honest day. Strong but believable beats perfect on every question.

Customer service and sales (store roles)

Store and merchandising applicants get extra questions on helping customers and making sales, like finding out what a project needs and pointing out the supplies that go with it.

Tip: Ask about the project, walk the customer to the product, and mention what else they will need. Pointing down an aisle is rarely the best answer.

Safety, teamwork and initiative

Questions on careful work, helping teammates and handling urgent problems, the safety and thoroughness, teamwork and initiative traits Home Depot names. In a store or warehouse that can mean spills, heavy items, ladders or freight.

Tip: Safety beats speed. Guard the hazard, use the right equipment or a team lift, and tell your supervisor.

Home Depot assessment example questions and answers

Written by us in the two formats Home Depot shows, never copied from the real test or Home Depot's samples. On the real test, the scenarios play as short videos. Try each one before you read the answer.

Example 1 · Most and least likely

A customer in the paint aisle wants to repaint a small bathroom but is not sure what to buy. You were about to restock a shelf.

Pick what you would be most likely and least likely to do.

  1. ATell her bathroom paint is two aisles over and go back to restocking.
  2. BAsk about the room and the walls, suggest a paint made for damp rooms, and mention the primer, tape and rollers she will need.
  3. CHand her a paint brochure and say to find you if she has questions.
  4. DCall the paint desk and stay with her until someone arrives.

Most likely: B. Least likely: A.

B finds out what the project needs and helps her leave with everything, which is what the customer service and sales questions look for. D is fine if you do not know paint, but A points and walks away.

Example 2 · Most and least likely

Carrying a box to the back, you see a spilled bottle of liquid soap in the main aisle. Customers are walking nearby.

Pick what you would be most likely and least likely to do.

  1. ADrop off the box first, then come back to clean it up.
  2. BStay by the spill, warn customers to walk around it, and call a teammate to bring the cleanup kit.
  3. CPush a cart in front of the spill and keep going.
  4. DMention it to the next associate you pass.

Most likely: B. Least likely: A.

Safety and thoroughness means guarding a hazard until it is handled. A leaves it open to a fall, and C and D only half solve it.

Example 3 · Most and least likely

Unloading freight, you see a teammate struggling to pull a heavy, awkward box down from a high shelf. Your own task is almost done.

Pick what you would be most likely and least likely to do.

  1. AFinish your own task, then check whether they still need help.
  2. BOffer a team lift right away, using the lifting steps from training.
  3. CTell them to leave it for the next shift.
  4. DClimb up and pull the box down yourself to save time.

Most likely: B. Least likely: D.

B covers teamwork and safety at once. D risks an injury to save a minute, which is the opposite of what the safety questions reward.

Example 4 · Most and least likely

At self-checkout, a customer's coupon will not scan. The line is growing and he is getting frustrated.

Pick what you would be most likely and least likely to do.

  1. ATell him coupons sometimes do not work and there is nothing you can do.
  2. BApologize, check the coupon's terms, apply it by hand if it is valid, or call a supervisor if you cannot.
  3. CSkip the coupon so the line keeps moving.
  4. DAsk him to step aside until the line clears.

Most likely: B. Least likely: A.

B owns the problem within the rules and brings in help when needed. A shuts the customer down, and C and D leave him without a fix.

Example 5 · Fits you best

Your store starts using a new handheld device for online orders. How do you usually handle a new tool like this?

Pick the answer that fits you best.

  1. AI wait until someone shows me, then copy what they do.
  2. BI go through the training, practice until I am comfortable, and ask when I get stuck.
  3. CI keep using the old way when I can, since it already works.
  4. DI figure it out as I go, even if I skip a few training steps.
  5. EI let teammates who like technology handle those tasks.

Best fit: B.

B shows adaptability and a learning mindset, two traits Home Depot names. A is passive, C resists change, D skips steps, and E avoids the work.

Example 6 · Fits you best

You cannot finish a task before your shift ends. What do you usually do?

Pick the answer that fits you best.

  1. AI leave it for the next shift to find.
  2. BI tell my supervisor what is done and what is left, so it can be handed off.
  3. CI stay late without asking so it gets finished.
  4. DI rush to finish, even if it means skipping a step.
  5. EI mention it to a coworker on my way out.

Best fit: B.

Responsibility and dependability means the work gets handed off cleanly. B does that. C works hours nobody approved, D cuts corners, and A and E leave it to chance.

How the Home Depot assessment is scored, and what happens next

Home Depot does not publish a passing score or show you a result. It says the questions ask how you approach work and are based on traits linked to doing well in hourly roles: customer service and sales (store roles only), adaptability and learning, responsibility and dependability, teamwork, safety and thoroughness, and initiative.

If your application is selected, Home Depot says it may contact you by email or phone for an interview. You can check where you stand under Check Application Status on the careers site, in the hourly in-store and distribution center section. Home Depot gives no timeline for hearing back.

Candidate reports add context. Associates on Reddit say your availability matters as much as the assessment, that open availability helps most, and that stores hire less in late summer and fall. One says the busiest hiring season starts in February.

How to prepare for the Home Depot assessment

  1. Step 1

Look at Home Depot's two sample screens

The assessment page shows one video scenario with most and least likely buttons and one "pick the answer that fits you best" question. Knowing both screens before you start saves time and nerves.

  2. Step 2

    Learn the six traits

Customer service and sales, adaptability and learning, responsibility and dependability, teamwork, safety and thoroughness, and initiative. For each one, think of a real example from work, school or volunteering.

  3. Step 3

Turn the sound on and find a quiet spot

The first part is video with audio, and captions are there if you need them. Set aside 20 minutes. You have 96 hours, but starting soon after you apply keeps your application moving.

  4. Step 4

Practice the most and least likely format

Two picks per question is harder than one. Practice choosing both, so the weakest response stands out as quickly as the best one.

Is the Home Depot assessment timed or watched?

Home Depot's assessment page mentions no webcam, proctor, ID check or screen recording. You can take it anywhere, on a phone or a computer, and you can stop and restart as many times as you need within 96 hours of clicking the link. Home Depot posts no time limit per question; it only says the whole test takes about 20 minutes.

Home Depot does not say whether the platform logs time per question or other activity, and it does not name the company that runs the test. Accommodations you ask for are not shared with hiring managers, and you can ask for an alternative to the assessment if a disability could affect your result.

Home Depot assessment answers, AI help and cheating

Are there Home Depot assessment answers online?

Answer lists and flashcards circulate, but Home Depot publishes no answer key, and the questions ask how you work, so there is no fixed list to memorize. What Home Depot does publish is the format and the six traits it measures. OphyAI Customer Service reads the exact question on your screen and shows the most and least likely picks, or the best-fit answer, in seconds.

Can AI help on the Home Depot assessment?

Yes. Both formats Home Depot uses, most and least likely picks for video scenarios and pick-the-best-fit questions, are formats OphyAI Customer Service handles, live or in practice. Share the test tab in Chrome or Edge on a computer, or use the Mac or Windows desktop app, where Listen picks up the video clips. It is not in the iPhone or Android apps.

Can Home Depot tell if you use AI on the assessment?

Home Depot's assessment page mentions no webcam, proctor or screen recording, and you can stop and restart within your 96 hours. It does not say what activity the test platform logs. In the OphyAI desktop app, answers show in a popup that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording. It does not work inside lockdown or proctored browsers, it does not take typing-speed tests, and hiding a window from screen share does not hide it from a webcam, a person in the room, or proctoring software.

OphyAI Customer Service and the Home Depot assessment

OphyAI Customer Service reads each question of an online customer service assessment on your screen and shows the best answer in a small window only you can see. Practice mode gives you realistic mock tests that explain why each option is better or worse.

OphyAI Customer Service works on the real Home Depot assessment, not just in practice. Share the test tab once in Chrome or Edge on a computer, or run it in the OphyAI desktop app for Mac and Windows. Each question is read as it appears and answered in seconds: the most and least likely picks for each video scenario, and the best-fit answer for each multiple-choice question, kept consistent across the test. In the desktop app, Listen picks up the video clips the test plays, and answers show in a popup that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording.

Want to practice first? The free 3-question sample needs only a free OphyAI account. Practice tests of 5, 10 or 20 original questions explain why each option is better or worse and end with a skills scorecard. Live sessions and practice tests are on the Premium plan ($59 a month, 500 credits): a live session uses 15 credits and stays open 2 hours, and a practice test uses 5. Home Depot's test runs on phones, but OphyAI Customer Service runs on a computer, not in the iPhone or Android apps.

Home Depot assessment questions

About 20 minutes, Home Depot says. You have 96 hours after you click the assessment link, and you can stop and restart as many times as you need in that window.

Store and merchandising roles get 11 video-based scenarios and 16 multiple-choice questions. Supply chain roles get 8 video-based scenarios and 10 multiple-choice questions.

Home Depot does not publish a passing score or show you a result. It says that if your application is selected, you may be contacted by email or phone for an interview. Associates on Reddit add that your availability counts a lot too.

Home Depot gives no timeline. Check your status under Check Application Status on the careers site. Associates on Reddit say hiring slows in late summer and fall and picks up again around February.

Not an official one. Home Depot publishes no answer sheet or answer key, so a PDF sold or shared online did not come from Home Depot and may not match your test. Home Depot does show two sample screens on its assessment page, one video scenario and one "fits you best" question. The worked examples on this page are our own, written in those two formats, so they show the style without copying the real test.

Home Depot publishes no retake rule, and we found no reliable candidate reports, so treat your first try as the one that counts. Within the 96-hour window you can stop and restart as often as you need before you finish.

Yes. Home Depot says the platform is mobile-enabled. OphyAI Customer Service, though, runs on a computer in Chrome or Edge, or in the Mac and Windows desktop app.

No. Home Depot says you do not need to be in the store to apply or take the assessment. It suggests a quiet place where you can focus.

Home Depot's job postings say you are sent to the assessment link right after you submit your application. Some candidates on Reddit say theirs came later by email, so check your inbox and spam folder too.
