The Ross Assessment: What It Asks and How to Answer

The Ross assessment is the short questionnaire candidates report at the end of the online application for Ross Dress for Less and dd's DISCOUNTS store jobs. Ross publishes nothing about the test itself. Candidates describe questions about workplace behavior, working with coworkers and team members, and the job you applied for, and warn that your answers need to be consistent. They say a call from the store to set up an interview is how you know you passed. OphyAI Customer Service helps live or in practice.

Ross assessment at a glance

Ross's careers site and job posts describe the job and the application, checked November 6, 2026, but not the test. So rows marked as candidate reports come from Indeed, Glassdoor and Reddit. Some candidates say they had no test at all.

Ross assessment question types

Ross does not publish its question formats. These are what candidates describe, plus what Ross's own job posts say the work needs, in our words.

Workplace behavior

Candidates describe questions about workplace behaviors and etiquette: how you act with coworkers, managers, schedules and rules.

Tip: Answer as the dependable, honest teammate the job post describes. A Reddit commenter's advice: be careful and keep your answers consistent.

Job situations

Candidates say the questions pertain to the position and how well you would work with coworkers and team members. Ross's posts describe the job: greet every customer, help in a courteous way, and call store leadership when needed.

Tip: Pick the answer that helps the customer politely and brings in a store leader for refunds, disputes or anything outside your role.

Safety and honesty

Ross's posts put safety first, ask associates to fix or report hazards right away, and to protect cash, card information and merchandise while following refund and void rules.

Tip: If an answer bends a cash, refund or safety rule, it is almost always the wrong one, even when it makes a customer happy.

Consistency

Candidates warn that your answers need to be consistent, which suggests some ideas come back in other words.

Tip: Decide once how you work, then answer every version of the same idea the same way.

Ross assessment example questions and answers

Ross does not publish its formats, so these use the formats most retail assessments use. Written by us, never copied from the real test. Try each one before you read the answer.

Example 1 · Best response

A customer at your register wants a cash refund for a jacket but has no receipt. Store policy needs a receipt for a cash refund.

What would you do?

  1. AGive the cash refund anyway, since the tags are still on.
  2. BExplain the policy kindly and call a store leader to see what options there are.
  3. CTell them no and call the next customer.
  4. DTell them to try a different Ross store.

Best response: B.

B is honest about the rule, stays friendly, and brings in leadership for the decision, as Ross's posts ask. A breaks the refund rule, C is cold, and D pushes the problem elsewhere.

Example 2 · Best response

In the stockroom, you notice a rolling rack of new merchandise is blocking an emergency exit.

What would you do?

  1. ALeave it, since the truck crew will move it later.
  2. BMove the rack to clear the exit and tell store leadership.
  3. CTape a note to the rack.
  4. DMention it at the end of your shift.

Best response: B.

Ross's posts ask associates to keep emergency exits clear and to correct or report unsafe conditions immediately. B does both. A, C and D leave the exit blocked.

Example 3 · Best response

A coworker asks you to ring up their friend and add your associate discount.

What would you do?

  1. ADo it this once, since it is a small amount.
  2. BPolitely say no, and tell a store leader if they keep pushing.
  3. CRing it up at full price without saying anything.
  4. DOffer to let the friend use your discount another day.

Best response: B.

Ross asks associates to show integrity and protect merchandise. B says no clearly and escalates only if needed. A and D break the rule, and C avoids the conversation.

Example 4 · Best response

It is close to closing. Your area is done, but the shoe department is a mess.

What would you do?

  1. AClock out on time, since shoes are not your area.
  2. BAsk the leader on duty if you should help recover shoes before close.
  3. CLeave a note for the morning team.
  4. DStart on shoes without telling anyone.

Best response: B.

B helps the team and checks with leadership first, so your time goes where the store needs it. D is willing but skips the check, and A and C leave the mess for others.

Example 5 · Agree or disagree

Statement: "I greet customers even when I am in the middle of a task."

How much do you agree?

  1. AStrongly disagree
  2. BDisagree
  3. CNeither agree nor disagree
  4. DAgree
  5. EStrongly agree

Strongest answer: Strongly agree.

Ross's posts ask associates to greet all customers with eye contact, a smile and a hello throughout the store. Answer any reversed version, such as one about finishing tasks before greeting, the same way.

Example 6 · Most like me / least like me

Pick the statement that is most like you and the one that is least like you.

  1. AI work best when the store is busy and fast-paced.
  2. BI would rather not talk to strangers.
  3. CI like to plan my day before it starts.
  4. DI enjoy organizing things so they are easy to find.

Most like me: A. Least like me: B.

Ross calls its stores fast-paced and asks for a sense of urgency, so A fits best. B clashes with greeting every customer. C and D are fine traits, but not the strongest pick at either end.

How the Ross assessment is scored, and what happens next

Ross publishes no passing score and does not describe the assessment anywhere on its careers site. Candidates on Indeed say the sign you passed is a call from a manager at the store you applied to, asking you in for an interview. Others say Ross emails you if you did not pass. Some current and former employees answer that there was no assessment for their job.

Glassdoor candidates report an average of 5 days to get hired as an associate (27 reports), and rate the process 1.8 out of 5 for difficulty. The stages they list most are a one-on-one interview, a background check, a skills test and a drug test. A former stock associate in Louisiana wrote in November 2024 that the store asked standard interview questions, called a reference, sent them for a same-day drug test and hired them on the spot.

Ross says it asks about criminal history only after an offer, and does an individual review for people with certain records. It publishes no retake rule or waiting period.

How to prepare for the Ross assessment

  1. Step 1

    Read the Retail Associate post

It lists what Ross values: greet every customer, help in a courteous way, call store leadership when needed, put safety first, and protect cash and merchandise. Those values point to the best answer in most scenarios.

  2. Step 2

    Learn the pattern

Customer first, rules followed, safety always, and a store leader for refunds, disputes and hazards. Help teammates before you report them.

  3. Step 3

    Stay consistent

Candidates warn that your answers need to match. Decide once how you work and answer every version of an idea the same way.

  4. Step 4

Be ready for a fast process

Glassdoor candidates report about 5 days from application to hire. Keep your phone on, answer unknown numbers, and have your availability ready for the interview.

Is the Ross assessment timed or proctored?

Ross mentions no webcam, proctor, ID check, time limit or screen recording for the application assessment, and it does not name the company that builds it. Ross's job posts link to its Taleo application, where candidates say the assessment comes at the end.

What Ross does say about technology: "Ross uses artificial intelligence to aid in some of our recruitment processes to generate text or enable search features." It does not say that covers the assessment or any activity tracking. Applicants with a disability who need help can follow the ADA accommodation instructions on Ross's careers site.

Ross assessment answers, AI help and cheating

Are there Ross assessment answers online?

Pages that claim to have Ross assessment answers are mostly flashcards, videos and copied pages on unrelated websites. Ross publishes no questions and no answer key, and does not even describe the test. OphyAI Customer Service reads the exact question on your screen and shows the best answer in seconds, so you are not guessing from someone else's list.

Can AI help on the Ross assessment?

Yes. The question types candidates describe, workplace behavior and job situations, fit the formats OphyAI Customer Service handles live or in practice: best response, agree or disagree, and most like me picks. Use Chrome or Edge on a computer, or the Mac or Windows desktop app. It is not in the iPhone or Android apps.

Can Ross tell if you use AI on the assessment?

Ross mentions no webcam, proctor or screen recording for the assessment, and does not say what activity its application logs. In the OphyAI desktop app, answers show in a popup that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording. It does not work inside lockdown or proctored browsers, it does not take typing-speed tests, and hiding a window from screen share does not hide it from a webcam, a person in the room, or proctoring software.

OphyAI Customer Service and the Ross assessment

OphyAI Customer Service reads each question of an online customer service assessment on your screen and shows the best answer in a small window only you can see. Practice mode gives you realistic mock tests that explain why each option is better or worse.

OphyAI Customer Service works on the real Ross assessment, not just in practice. Do the application on a computer and share the test tab once in Chrome or Edge, or run it in the OphyAI desktop app for Mac and Windows. Each question is read as it appears and answered in seconds: the best response to a customer or coworker situation, an agree-or-disagree choice, or the most like me and least like me picks, kept consistent with your earlier answers. In the desktop app, answers show in a popup that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording.

Ross assessment questions

Ross does not publish a length. Candidates describe it as a short assessment at the end of the online application.

Ross does not say. Candidates on Indeed say a manager from the store calls to set up an interview if you passed, and some say Ross emails you if you did not.

Not always, from candidate reports. Several Ross employees answer on Indeed that they had no assessment test, while others describe a short one at the end of the application.

Ross publishes no retake rule or waiting period. Waits you see online come from prep sites or single posts, not from Ross.

Glassdoor candidates report about 5 days on average for associate jobs. Ross says it adds about 110 new stores a year, and new stores hire from the local community.

Ross Stores runs both Ross Dress for Less and dd's DISCOUNTS, and its careers site lists store jobs for both brands. Ross does not say whether the assessment differs between them.

Yes, after an offer. Ross says it seeks criminal history only after an offer of employment, and Glassdoor candidates list background checks and drug tests among the common stages.

Its Retail Associate posts ask for friendly, respectful communication with customers and coworkers, basic retail math, comfort with registers, handheld devices and a PC, and the ability to stand and move around the store all shift and sometimes lift over 25 pounds.
