Can Online Assessments Detect AI? Platform by Platform

It depends on the platform and on what the employer switches on. Almost every platform logs copy and paste and when you leave the test window. Many can add webcam snapshots, screen recording, ID checks or a locked-down test app, and several retest strong scores under supervision. Below is what each major platform says it watches, from its own pages, and where OphyAI fits.

What each platform watches

From each vendor's own help and product pages, read November 3, 2026. Employers turn add-ons on or off per test, so the same platform can watch more on one test than on another.

How OphyAI works on screen

OphyAI reads the question on your screen and answers in real time, in a window that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording.

Aptitude Test mode, for aptitude and cognitive tests

Aptitude Test mode in the OphyAI desktop app reads each multiple-choice question on your screen and shows the answer, with a one-line reason, in a small popup only you can see.

Start a test in the app, then open your assessment. With Auto on, OphyAI answers each question as it loads; with Auto off, press Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A on a question. A loading, instructions or results screen reads as "No question on screen".

The popup is excluded from screen sharing and screen recording by macOS and Windows, floats over a full-screen browser, and opens without taking focus from the test window. Nothing is recorded during a test. The app looks at the screen your cursor is on only when you press the hotkey or when Auto sees a new question.

  • Math and word problems: Computed exactly rather than estimated, then matched to the options shown.
  • Number and letter series: Finds the rule and checks it against every term before it answers.
  • Logic statements: True, False or Uncertain syllogisms, answered only from the statements given.
  • Verbal: analogies and fill in the blank: Matches the exact relationship or meaning, including two-blank sentences.
  • Attention to detail: "How many are exactly the same" checks, compared character by character.
  • Shape and pattern puzzles: Rotation, count, shading, size and which shape sits inside which.

Each test uses 15 credits and stays open for 2 hours.

Coding Copilot, for coding tests and live coding interviews

Coding Copilot in the OphyAI desktop app reads the coding problem on your screen with one hotkey and returns an approach, complexity notes and working code in your language.

Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A snaps the problem window, even when other windows cover it, and Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + S lets you drag a box around part of the screen. In a live interview, Space or Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L transcribes the question the interviewer asks out loud.

Answers show as a card in a floating overlay that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording. It stays on top of a full-screen editor or browser and opens without taking the keyboard from your editor.

Each answer card shows how OphyAI read the problem, what to say first, the code with line numbers, a dry run with edge cases, and the Big O. Follow-ups remember the problem, so "now handle duplicates" updates the same code. When you end a session you get a scored review with the full coding transcript.

Coding Interview is on the Premium plan ($59 a month, 500 credits) and uses 15 credits per session.

How Coding Copilot works

What it is hidden from, and what it is not

Hidden from screen sharing and screen recording, by the operating system. Hiding the popup from screen share does not hide it from a webcam, a person in the room, or proctoring and lockdown software that lists running apps or blocks screen capture. Hiding a window from screen share does not hide it from a webcam, a person watching, keystroke and paste history, tab or focus tracking, or proctoring software. OphyAI makes no promise about what a given platform will or will not flag.

Questions about AI and online assessments

Some try. TestGorilla blocks known AI browser agents such as ChatGPT Agent Mode, HackerRank and Codility run AI plagiarism checks on code, Saville says it checks for AI use, and HireQuotient flags AI-generated answers.

Only if the platform records it. Criteria's AI Proctoring takes desktop screen captures, HackerRank's Proctor Mode records your whole browser screen, and CodeSignal's proctored tests record your screen. Most tests without proctoring do not see your screen at all.

Many can. TestGorilla takes webcam snapshots by default, CodeSignal records camera and microphone on proctored tests, and Criteria, SHL, HackerRank, Codility and HireQuotient offer webcam options employers can switch on. Platforms such as Criteria tell you before the test what is recorded and ask for camera access.

Usually the employer sees a flag or a tier, not an automatic rejection. TestGorilla calls its tiers signals for review, Wonderlic advises a supervised retest for flagged candidates, Criteria can mark an "Invalid Result," and Karat adds an integrity flag after a second review.

OphyAI runs as a desktop app, and its windows are excluded from screen sharing and screen recording by macOS and Windows. Hiding a window from screen share does not hide it from a webcam, a person watching, keystroke and paste history, tab or focus tracking, or proctoring software. It is also not hidden from lockdown software that lists running apps or blocks screen capture, or from a supervised retest. OphyAI makes no promise about what a given platform will or will not flag.

Not for the real tests. Criteria, PI, SHL, TestGorilla, Aon, Korn Ferry and Saville all draw from large or adaptive question banks, so lists of answers online are practice items. Tools like OphyAI Aptitude Test answer the question actually on your screen instead.
