Target Assessment Test: Questions, Answers and What Comes Next

The Target assessment is a short questionnaire in some Target job applications; candidates report it for store roles like general merchandise, fulfillment and closing. They call it the Virtual Job Preview and Assessment: a quick look at the job, then statements about how you work and questions about your work history. Target says to allow up to 30 minutes for the application. If you move on, you may get a 30-minute HireVue video interview that a recruiter or hiring manager reviews. OphyAI Customer Service helps live or in practice.

Target assessment at a glance

From Target's own careers pages (hiring process, FAQs and recorded video interviews), checked November 6, 2026. Target says little about the assessment itself, so rows marked as candidate reports come from Reddit posts. Your application email wins if it says something different.

What it isTarget says some applications include "a quick assessment regarding job-related skills," taken inside the online application in Workday
Who runs itTarget's FAQ sends assessment problems to a support form on HireVue's candidate help site. A 2022 applicant quoted the application saying Modern Hire, now part of HireVue, runs it for Target
What it coversCandidate reports: a short Virtual Job Preview of the job, then agree-or-disagree statements about how you work and questions about past jobs. The same ideas come back in different words
TimeTarget says to allow up to 30 minutes for an hourly application. It publishes no separate time for the assessment; one candidate says it is timed

Target assessment question types

Target does not publish its question formats. These come from candidate reports and Target's own interview pages, explained in our words. Target calls customers "guests", so the questions do too.

Virtual Job Preview

Candidates say the assessment opens with a short preview of what the job involves. HireVue, whose help site Target points to, describes its job tryouts as job-related tasks that show you the role.

Tip: Do not skip through it. It shows what Target expects in the role, and the questions that follow measure the same things.

Work style statements

Statements about how you work that you agree or disagree with, such as how you handle changes or busy shifts. Candidates say the same few ideas are asked many times in different words.

Tip: Decide what you believe once and answer every reworded version the same way. One candidate says the section is timed, so keep moving.

Work history and preferences

Questions about past jobs, availability and the kind of work you want. A 2023 candidate said one answer about a previous job changed the questions that followed.

Tip: Read each question before you click. That candidate could not reset the survey, even by deleting the application.

Guest and team situations

Target says the assessment covers job-related skills, and HireVue builds its job tryouts around job tasks, so expect some everyday store moments with a guest or teammate where you pick the best response. Candidates mostly describe the statements above.

Tip: Choose the answer that helps the guest right away, stays friendly and keeps the team informed.

Recorded video questions (HireVue)

For some roles, a later step where you record answers to set questions on your phone, tablet or computer. Target says interviewers ask how you handled a situation before or how you would handle one.

Tip: Answer with one real story: the situation, what you did and how it ended, in about a minute.

Target assessment example questions and answers

Written by us in the formats candidates and Target describe, never copied from the real test. Try each one before you read the answer.

Example 1 · Best response

You are filling shelves in the toy aisle an hour before close. A guest asks whether a toy she saw online is in stock, and you cannot see it on the shelf.

What would you do?

  1. ATell her it must be sold out.
  2. BCheck the stock on your handheld, look in the backroom if it shows in stock, and offer an online order or pickup if it is not.
  3. CTell her to check the Target app.
  4. DAsk her to wait until you finish the shelf.

Best response: B.

B checks the facts and gives her a way to get the toy either way. A guesses, C sends her away, and D puts your task ahead of the guest.

Example 2 · Best response

You bring a pickup order out to a guest's car and notice one item from the order list is missing from the bags.

What would you do?

  1. AHand over the bags and let the guest call if something is wrong.
  2. BTell the guest, apologize, and either get the item now or explain what happens next.
  3. CGo back inside to look for it without saying anything.
  4. DSwap in a different item of the same price.

Best response: B.

B is honest and fixes the problem on the spot. A hides a mistake you already know about, C leaves the guest waiting with no idea why, and D gives them something they did not order.

Example 3 · Best response

At close, a teammate clocks out and leaves the next aisle messy. Your own zone is already done.

What would you do?

  1. ALeave it, since it is not your aisle.
  2. BLet your team lead know the aisle still needs work and offer to help finish it.
  3. CText the teammate and tell them to come back.
  4. DComplain about it in the team group chat.

Best response: B.

B gets the store ready for the morning and keeps your lead informed. A leaves the job undone, and C and D create conflict without fixing anything.

Example 4 · Agree or disagree

Statement: "When my task changes in the middle of a shift, I switch quickly and keep going."

How much do you agree?

  1. AStrongly disagree
  2. BDisagree
  3. CNeither agree nor disagree
  4. DAgree
  5. EStrongly agree

Strongest answer: Strongly agree.

Store shifts change fast, so flexibility is one of the traits these statements look for. Expect the idea again in other words, and give the same answer each time.

Example 5 · Agree or disagree

Statement: "It is hard for me to stay friendly with people who are rude to me."

How much do you agree?

  1. AStrongly disagree
  2. BDisagree
  3. CNeither agree nor disagree
  4. DAgree
  5. EStrongly agree

Strongest answer: Strongly disagree.

This is a reversed statement about staying calm with guests. Disagreeing strongly matches the steady, guest-first answers you gave elsewhere.

Example 6 · Spoken answer

Video interview question: "Tell us about a time you helped someone who was frustrated."

Which answer plan is strongest?

  1. ASay you are a people person and always stay calm.
  2. BDescribe one real time: what was wrong, what you did step by step, and how it ended, in about a minute.
  3. CExplain why the person was being unreasonable.
  4. DDescribe in general how you would handle a frustrated guest at Target.

Strongest plan: B.

Target says interviewers ask for specific examples of how you handled a situation. B gives one, with a result. A is a claim with no proof, C blames the other person, and D answers a different question.

How the Target assessment is scored, and what happens next

Target does not publish how the application assessment is scored or whether there is a passing score. A 2022 applicant quoted the application saying it is not available for Target to review until you finish the assessment and submit. HireVue, whose support form Target links to for assessment problems, says its job tryouts give employers a fit profile that rates you on the job's skills and on how likely you are to perform well and stay.

How much the score counts is unclear. In a May 2026 Reddit thread, a person who said they review applications at Target wrote that they were trained not to put much weight on the personality assessment score and to look mainly at your preferences, so they can place you better. That is one person's report, not Target policy.

After you apply, Target's recruiting team may contact you, or you may only get emails. Check your status in Workday under "My Applications." If you get a recorded video interview, a recruiter or hiring manager watches it along with your resume and application, and Target says it usually replies within five business days. If more than ten days pass, contact your recruiter or ask the store for human resources.

How to prepare for the Target assessment

  1. Step 1

    Watch the job preview closely

The preview shows the work Target expects in the role, like helping guests, restocking and handling pickup. The questions after it measure the same things.

  2. Step 2

Answer statements the same way every time

Candidates say a handful of ideas repeat in different and reversed wording. Decide once how you work and match it. Read work history questions carefully, since one answer can change the next questions.

  3. Step 3

Prepare three short stories for the video step

Target's own tip is to practice talking about challenges where you took action to get a good result. Have one story each about helping a guest, working on a team and handling a busy or changing shift.

  4. Step 4

Use the practice before you record

HireVue lets you practice as often as you like before Target's video interview, and practice answers are never sent. Check your camera, microphone and lighting there, and set aside about 30 minutes.

Is the Target assessment proctored?

Target's pages mention no webcam, proctor or ID check for the application assessment, which you take inside the online application. Target publishes no time limit for it, though one candidate says it is timed and that speed seemed to matter.

The recorded video interview is different: it uses your camera and microphone on a phone, tablet or computer (Chrome is recommended on computers) and records each answer. You can practice as often as you like and re-record answers, and Target only sees the final recording you submit. Target does not allow retaking the whole interview, and the intro video cannot be replayed.

Target assessment answers, AI help and cheating

Are there Target assessment answers online?

Videos and flashcards claim to have them, but Target publishes no answer key and does not say how the assessment is scored. Candidates say the same ideas repeat in different words, so what matters is answering consistently. OphyAI Customer Service reads each question on your screen and keeps your work style answers consistent across the test.

Can AI help on the Target assessment?

Yes. Agree-or-disagree statements and best-response store situations are formats OphyAI Customer Service handles, and for a recorded video answer it writes a short script to say. Share the tab in Chrome or Edge on a computer, or use the Mac or Windows desktop app. It is not in the iPhone or Android apps.

Can Target tell if you use AI on the assessment?

Target's pages mention no webcam, proctor or screen recording for the application assessment. The HireVue video interview is recorded on your camera, and a recruiter or hiring manager watches it. In the OphyAI desktop app, answers show in a popup that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording. It does not work inside lockdown or proctored browsers, it does not take typing-speed tests, and hiding a window from screen share does not hide it from a webcam, a person in the room, or proctoring software.

OphyAI Customer Service and the Target assessment

OphyAI Customer Service reads each question of an online customer service assessment on your screen and shows the best answer in a small window only you can see. Practice mode gives you realistic mock tests that explain why each option is better or worse.

OphyAI Customer Service works on the real Target assessment, not just in practice. Share the application tab once in Chrome or Edge on a computer, or run it in the OphyAI desktop app for Mac and Windows. Each question is read as it appears and answered in seconds: the best response to a guest or team situation, or an agree-or-disagree choice kept consistent across the reworded statements. When the test records a video answer, it writes a short script to say. In the desktop app, answers show in a popup that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording.

Want to practice first? The free 3-question sample needs only a free OphyAI account. Practice tests of 5, 10 or 20 original questions read the customer's line aloud, explain every option, give AI feedback on spoken answers and end with a skills scorecard. Live sessions and practice tests are on the Premium plan ($59 a month, 500 credits): a live session uses 15 credits and stays open 2 hours, and a practice test uses 5. It runs on a computer, not in the iPhone or Android apps.

Target assessment questions

Target says to allow up to 30 minutes for an hourly application, and the assessment is part of it. Target publishes no separate time for the assessment. If you get the HireVue video interview later, plan for about 30 minutes more.

Target does not publish a passing score or show you a result. A 2022 applicant quoted the application saying Target cannot review it until the assessment is done. A Target reviewer on Reddit said the score is not weighted heavily and that your preferences matter more.

After a recorded video interview, Target says it usually replies within five business days, and to contact your recruiter or the store's human resources if it has been more than ten days. For the application itself, Target gives no timeline: check Workday under "My Applications."

Target does not allow retakes of the recorded video interview and publishes no retake rule for the application assessment. Its FAQ says you can apply to a similar or different job at any time, but you may not be able to reapply to the same job.

Target says its recorded video interview works on any smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera and microphone, and HireVue says its job tryouts work on phones too. OphyAI Customer Service runs on a computer in Chrome or Edge, or in the Mac and Windows desktop app.

Target's recruiting team reviews your application and may contact you for a phone, virtual, in-person or recorded video interview. If you get an offer, it comes through Workday, followed by a background check and, for some jobs, a drug screen within 24 hours of accepting.

It is the name candidates see on the assessment step of the application: a short look at the job, then the assessment questions. A 2022 applicant quoted the application saying Modern Hire, now part of HireVue, runs it for Target.

Yes, for recorded video interviews. The invite comes from interviews@hirevue.com with the subject "Congrats! You've been selected to interview with Target." Target's FAQ also sends assessment problems to a HireVue support form.
