The Kroger Assessment: What It Asks and How to Answer

The Kroger assessment is the pre-hire test many applicants take when they apply for store and pharmacy jobs at krogerfamilycareers.com, which also hires for Ralphs, Fred Meyer, King Soopers and other Kroger banners. Kroger does not publish its format, time limit or passing score. Candidates report an online assessment tied to the application, which some emails call a virtual job tryout, and an "On-Demand" web and video step. Test-prep sites describe customer situations and work style statements. OphyAI Customer Service can help live or in practice.

Kroger assessment at a glance

Kroger publishes very little about its assessment, so much of this table comes from candidate reports, labeled as such. Kroger's own facts come from its careers site and job postings, checked November 6, 2026. Your application task wins if it says something different.

Kroger assessment question types

Kroger does not publish its question types. These are the formats candidates and test-prep sites describe, plus the themes in Kroger's own sample interview questions, which show what it rewards.

Customer situations

A store scene with several possible responses: a coupon that will not come off, a shopper who cannot find an item, an upset customer at the deli counter. Test-prep sites describe picking the best response or rating each one.

Tip: Choose the answer that fixes the problem for the customer, follows store policy, and then gets you back to your task.

Work style statements

Statements about how you work, answered on an agree to disagree scale or by picking the one most like you. They look for reliable, friendly, safety-minded habits.

Tip: Stay consistent. Similar ideas come back in different words, and a pattern that flips looks careless.

Recorded video answers

Candidates report an "On-Demand" web and video step, and a Kroger technology candidate described recording video answers to questions on screen. Not every store applicant mentions one.

Tip: Use a simple structure: the situation, what you did and how it ended, in about a minute. Speak slowly and clearly.

Kroger values and service themes

Kroger's own sample interview questions ask about going above and beyond for someone, balancing a task with the people around you, being friendly, improving yourself, and fixing something out of place without being asked.

Tip: Have a short true story for each theme. They are a fair guide to what Kroger rewards in any question.

Basic math at the register

Front end postings list counting, addition and subtraction as a minimum skill, and test-prep sites mention a short skills check for some roles.

Tip: Practice making change and adding up a few prices without a calculator.

Kroger assessment example questions and answers

Written by us in the formats candidates and test-prep sites describe, built on duties from Kroger's own job postings, never copied from a real test. Try each one before you read the answer.

Example 1 · Best response

A customer in your check lane has a digital coupon that will not come off the total. She says it is loaded on her card, and the line behind her is growing.

Pick the best response.

  1. ATell her the coupon must be expired and finish the sale.
  2. BCheck that the offer is on her account and the item matches, and if it still fails, follow store procedure or call a front end lead while keeping her informed.
  3. CTake the amount off yourself so she stops complaining.
  4. DAsk her to go to customer service after she pays and sort it out there.

Best response: B.

B checks the facts, follows procedure and keeps her in the loop. Kroger postings ask cashiers to handle loyalty offers and coupons according to company policy, which C ignores. A guesses, and D makes her do the work.

Example 2 · Rate each response

You are stocking the cereal aisle when a shopper asks where the gluten-free pasta is.

Rate each response from very ineffective to very effective.

  1. AWalk her to the pasta and ask if she needs anything else.
  2. BCheck the store's item locator or ask a coworker if you are not sure where it is, then show her.
  3. CTell her the aisle number and keep stocking.
  4. DSay you do not work in that department.

A: very effective. B: effective. C: somewhat effective. D: very ineffective.

Kroger's careers site says grocery clerks always have time to greet shoppers and help them find missing items. A does that fully, and B is the right move when you do not know. C is fine only on a very busy shift, and D leaves her stranded.

Example 3 · Best response

A customer who looks about 25 is buying beer, and the register asks for an ID check. He says he left his ID at home and has bought beer here before.

Pick the best response.

  1. AApprove it, since he looks old enough.
  2. BPolitely explain you need a valid ID for every alcohol sale, offer to set the beer aside, and finish the rest of his order.
  3. CLet him show a photo of a friend's ID.
  4. DTell him to try a different register.

Best response: B.

Kroger postings ask cashiers to follow the guidelines on restricted sale items like alcohol and tobacco. B follows the rule and still treats him well. A and C break the rule, and D just moves the problem to a coworker.

Example 4 · Most and least effective

At the deli counter, a customer says the sliced turkey she bought yesterday tastes off, and she is getting loud.

Pick the most effective and the least effective response.

  1. AArgue that the turkey was fresh when you sliced it.
  2. BListen, apologize, offer a replacement or refund under store policy, and let your lead know about the product.
  3. CTell her to call the corporate customer line.
  4. DIgnore her tone and ask the next customer what they need.

Most effective: B. Least effective: A.

B calms her down, fixes the problem within policy and flags a possible food safety issue. A turns a complaint into a fight, and Kroger postings ask associates to handle conflict in a calm, nonconfrontational way.

Example 5 · Work style: most like me / least like me

Pick the statement most like you and the one least like you.

  1. AIf I see a spill or a mess, I clean it up even if it is not my area.
  2. BI like having a set list of tasks and finishing them in order.
  3. CI wait for a manager to tell me what to do next.
  4. DI enjoy chatting with customers during a shift.

Most like me: A. Least like me: C.

Kroger's own interview questions ask about noticing something out of place and fixing it without being asked, so A matches. C is the opposite. B and D are both fine, because real tests pair good traits on purpose; pick what you truly do most.

Example 6 · Spoken answer

A recorded question appears on screen: "Tell us about a time you went out of your way to help someone." You have about a minute to answer.

Which way of answering works best?

  1. AStart with why you want to work at Kroger.
  2. BGive one short true story: the situation, what you did, and how the person reacted.
  3. CSay you always make people happy and stop there.

Best approach: B.

Kroger's sample interview questions ask for exactly this kind of story: the other person's situation, what you did and how they responded. A misses the question and C gives no example. For recorded answers, OphyAI Customer Service writes a short script you can say.

How the Kroger assessment is scored, and what happens next

Kroger does not publish how its assessment is scored or what counts as a pass. Work style questions have no single right answer, so the safest pattern is consistent and fits the job: reliable, friendly, safety-minded and willing to help without being asked, which matches the themes in Kroger's own sample interview questions.

The next step is an interview. One Online Grocery Pick-Up candidate in Nashville got a single message to schedule an interview and take the online assessment, then had an easy interview with a district HR specialist; another in Missouri was hired on the spot after a three-day process (candidate reports, 2025). Candidates describe questions about experience, past jobs and availability.

Track your status with Check Application Status on Kroger's careers site. Response times vary: Reddit commenters say anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks, depending on who runs interviews and how many people the store needs (candidate reports).

How to prepare for the Kroger assessment

  1. Step 1

Apply for one store and department

Search krogerfamilycareers.com by banner and location, read the posting and apply. Postings list what the job needs, from calm conflict handling to basic math, which is a good guide to the assessment.

  2. Step 2

    Learn Kroger's values

Kroger postings name respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion and safety. Its sample interview questions add going above and beyond, staying friendly, and fixing what is out of place without being asked.

  3. Step 3

Get set up for a video step

If your task mentions web or video, use a computer with a working camera and microphone, good light and a quiet room. Have a short true story ready about helping someone.

  4. Step 4

    Practice the formats

Work through the examples above, then try OphyAI's free 3-question sample or a practice test of 5, 10 or 20 questions. Spoken and typed practice answers get AI feedback.

Is the Kroger assessment proctored, and what does it record?

Kroger does not describe a proctor, webcam check or screen recording for its store assessment. If your version has the "On-Demand" web and video step, that part records you on camera.

Timing and retakes: Kroger does not publish a time limit or a retake rule. Candidates describe the assessment as tied to their applications: some say the site asked them to take it again when they applied later, others say it would not let them redo it, and some report links that would not open (candidate reports). Finish it as soon as it appears, on a computer with a steady connection.

Kroger assessment answers, AI help and cheating

Are there Kroger assessment answers online?

Sites and PDFs promise "Kroger assessment answers," but Kroger does not publish its questions, work style items have no answer key, and the wording changes. What carries over is the pattern: help the customer, follow policy on coupons, ID checks and food safety, and stay calm. The examples on this page are our own. For the questions on your screen, OphyAI Customer Service shows the best answer and why as each one loads.

Can AI help on the Kroger assessment?

Yes, on the customer situation, work style and recorded answer parts. OphyAI Customer Service reads each question on your screen in Chrome, Edge or the Mac and Windows desktop app and shows the best response, a rating for each option, a consistent work style choice or a short script to say, in seconds. It also has practice tests in the same formats. It is not built for math or detail-checking questions.

Can Kroger tell if you use AI on the assessment?

Kroger does not describe a proctor or screen recording for its store assessment. A video step, if your version has one, records you on camera. Know the product limits: it does not work inside lockdown or proctored browsers, it does not take typing-speed tests, and hiding a window from screen share does not hide it from a webcam, a person in the room, or proctoring software.

OphyAI Customer Service and the Kroger assessment

OphyAI Customer Service reads each question of an online customer service assessment on your screen and shows the best answer in a small window only you can see. Practice mode gives you realistic mock tests that explain why each option is better or worse.

Use OphyAI Customer Service on your real Kroger assessment, not just to practice. Share the test tab once in Chrome or Edge on a computer, or run it in the OphyAI desktop app for Mac and Windows. Each question is read as it appears and answered in seconds: the best response or a rating for each option in customer situations, consistent work style choices, and a short script to say if the test records a video answer, in a small window only you can see.

It is not built for math or detail-checking questions, if your version has them, so answer those yourself. In the desktop app, answers show in a popup that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording. A live session uses 15 credits and stays open 2 hours, and Customer Service is on the Premium plan ($59 a month, 500 credits).

Kroger assessment questions

Kroger does not publish a time, and candidates rarely mention one. Test-prep sites estimate 15 to 30 minutes, which we could not confirm. Set aside 45 minutes in a quiet place so a video step or a slow page does not rush you.

Kroger does not publish a pass mark. Your result goes with your application before any interview. Work style questions have no right answers, so a consistent, customer-first pattern is what counts.

Kroger gives no timeline. Reddit commenters say anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks, and Glassdoor candidates describe processes from three days to two weeks (candidate reports). Use Check Application Status on the careers site.

Kroger does not publish a retake rule. Candidates describe the assessment as tied to their profile: some say the site asked them to take it again when they applied later, and others say it would not let them redo it (candidate reports).

Kroger does not publish device rules, and candidates report technical problems opening the assessment. A computer is the safer choice, especially for a video step, and it is the only way to use OphyAI Customer Service, which runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer or in the Mac and Windows desktop app.

Kroger hires for Ralphs, Fred Meyer, King Soopers and its other banners through one careers site, krogerfamilycareers.com, so you apply the same way. Kroger does not publish whether the assessment differs by banner or role.

If you move forward, you are invited to an interview, sometimes with a district HR specialist or a store leader. Candidates describe questions about experience, past jobs and availability, and some are hired on the spot (candidate reports). Kroger's careers site lists sample interview questions about going above and beyond, staying friendly and fixing problems without being asked.
