The CVS Assessment: How the Virtual Job Tryout Works

The CVS assessment is the Virtual Job Tryout (VJT), an online test CVS gives for many high-volume store, pharmacy and call center jobs. You start it from Candidate Home in Workday after you apply. It mixes a job preview, patient and customer scenarios where you pick your most and least likely response, work style choices and questions about your history, and pharmacy versions have included a prescription accuracy check. Set aside up to an hour. CVS does not share scores or publish an answer key, so the CVS assessment answers on this page are our own worked examples. OphyAI Customer Service can help live or in practice.

CVS assessment at a glance

From CVS Health's current and archived hiring pages, CVS's own VJT guide for pharmacy intern applicants, and HireVue's candidate help pages, checked November 6, 2026. Older CVS details are marked as older, and candidate reports are labeled. Your VJT task in Candidate Home wins if it says something different.

What it isThe Virtual Job Tryout (VJT), which CVS calls "a step in our interview process." CVS says it screens over a million job applicants a year
Who gets itMany high-volume roles. CVS has run a Retail VJT and a Pharmacy Benefits Management VJT, and candidates report it for pharmacy technician, store and work-at-home customer service jobs
How you start itFrom a task on your Candidate Home page in Workday, after you finish the application
PlatformHireVue's Virtual Job Tryout. CVS's VJT help link goes to HireVue's candidate support desk. The VJT came to HireVue with Modern Hire in May 2023
Parts (pharmacy intern version)Six exercises: a job preview, Working with Patients (most and least likely response), Accuracy Checking, Drivers, Work Styles and Tell Us Your Story. Other versions are built around their own job
TimeCVS has said the VJT is not timed and will not time out, though one pharmacy intern section scores speed. CVS says to set aside up to an hour
Audio and languageEach page plays a short audio clip, so use speakers or headphones. CVS has offered a text-only mode and English or Spanish
DeviceHireVue says the VJT runs on phones, tablets and computers, needs at least a 1024 x 768 screen, and works best in Chrome
ResultsCVS does not give applicants a score. Check your status in Candidate Home under My Applications
RetakesCVS's older VJT pages said you cannot retake it for six months after you submit. HireVue says only CVS can approve a reset

CVS assessment question types

CVS has published the parts of its pharmacy intern VJT, and HireVue's help pages describe the same building blocks. Store, pharmacy technician and call center versions use their own scenarios, so your exercises may differ.

Realistic job preview

A CVS colleague describes the job: typical tasks, what a retail pharmacy is like, and the hard and rewarding parts. In the pharmacy intern version it is the longest exercise, and you only watch and listen.

Tip: Pay attention. The scenarios that follow reward the same priorities the preview stresses: patient safety, accuracy and service.

Working with patients and customers

A pharmacy or store situation with four possible responses. You pick the one you would be most likely to do and the one you would be least likely to do. CVS says every response is possible, so it is not a one-right-answer quiz.

Tip: Rank all four in your head first. Safe and helpful goes on top; anything that skips the pharmacist or ignores privacy goes to the bottom.

Accuracy checking

Prescription tasks: you enter prescription data or check whether the data shown is right. HireVue describes VJT screens with four lines, where each line needs an answer, "match" or "error" before Next appears.

Tip: Compare one field at a time: drug name, strength, directions, quantity, refills and prescriber. In the pharmacy intern version speed counts in one section, so work at a steady pace.

Drivers

Two statements about what a job could offer, and you pick the one you would value more. You may see a statement again, but CVS says never the same pair twice.

Tip: Think about the real job. Pharmacies and stores run on procedures, teamwork and helping people.

Work styles

Paired statements about how you like to work. You choose which one is more like you, and how much more.

Tip: Answer the way you work on a normal shift and stay consistent. The same ideas come back in different words.

Tell us your story

Questions about your work history. If you have not worked yet, CVS says to use school, sports or community experience.

Tip: Keep dates and job titles the same as on your application.

CVS assessment answers: worked examples

Written by us in the formats CVS describes for its VJT, with store, pharmacy and call center scenarios, never copied from a real test. Try each one before you read the answer and why.

Example 1 · Most and least likely

A customer at the pharmacy pickup window says her refill should be ready, but the system shows her insurance rejected the claim. Four cars are waiting in the drive-thru behind her.

Pick the response you would be most likely to give and the one you would be least likely to give.

  1. ATell her the insurance rejected it and she needs to call her insurance company.
  2. BExplain that the claim was rejected and why, ask the pharmacy team to check for a fix or another option, and give her an honest time.
  3. CAsk her to come back tomorrow so you can keep the line moving.
  4. DRing the prescription up at the cash price without mentioning the rejection.

Most likely: B. Least likely: D.

B tells her what happened, brings in the right people and sets an honest expectation. D surprises her with a price she never agreed to. A and C are not terrible, but they hand the whole problem back to her.

Example 2 · Most and least likely

You are helping a patient at the pharmacy counter. The next person in line, her neighbor, steps up beside her and asks what the medicine is for.

Pick the response you would be most likely to give and the one you would be least likely to give.

  1. AAnswer the neighbor, since the patient did not object.
  2. BPolitely ask the neighbor to wait behind the line marker, then finish with the patient quietly.
  3. CKeep going and read the medication names out loud as usual.
  4. DHand the bag over quickly and skip the rest of the pickup steps so she can leave.

Most likely: B. Least likely: A.

B protects the patient's privacy without being rude to anyone. A shares health details with a third person, which is the worst option here. C and D are weak too: saying drug names out loud and skipping pickup steps both put the patient at risk.

Example 3 · Most and least likely

A customer at the front register is buying a cold medicine and asks you if it is safe to take with his blood pressure pills.

Pick the response you would be most likely to give and the one you would be least likely to give.

  1. ATell him it should be fine, because most people take both.
  2. BExplain that the pharmacist is the right person to answer that, and walk him to the pharmacy counter or call the pharmacist over.
  3. CRead the back of the box to him and let him decide.
  4. DSuggest he look it up online when he gets home.

Most likely: B. Least likely: A.

Questions about whether medicines are safe together belong to the pharmacist. B gets him a real answer in a minute. A guesses on a safety question, which a store or pharmacy associate should never do.

Example 4 · Most and least likely

On a work-from-home customer service call, a member says her mail-order prescription is late and she has two pills left. She is upset and talking fast.

Pick the response you would be most likely to give and the one you would be least likely to give.

  1. ARead her the standard shipping policy and end the call.
  2. BApologize, confirm her details, check the order status, explain the options you can offer, and tell her exactly what happens next.
  3. CTell her delays happen and to call back if it does not arrive.
  4. DPromise it will arrive tomorrow before you check anything.

Most likely: B. Least likely: D.

B calms her down, finds the facts and owns the next step. D makes a promise you may not be able to keep, which turns a late package into a broken promise. A and C leave a patient with two pills and no plan.

Example 5 · Work style pair

Two statements about how you work. Pick the one that is more like you, then say how much more.

Choose A or B, then slightly, somewhat or much more like you.

  1. AI double-check details even when it slows me down.
  2. BI like to finish tasks fast and move straight to the next one.

For a CVS store or pharmacy job, lean A: somewhat or much more like you.

Both are good traits, which is why paired questions feel hard. In a pharmacy, accuracy protects patients, so careful checking fits the job better. Answer the way you really work, and keep the same lean when the idea comes back in other words.

Example 6 · What you value more

Two things a job could offer. Pick the one you would value more.

  1. AClear steps and procedures to follow.
  2. BFreedom to do things my own way.

For most CVS store and pharmacy jobs, A fits better.

Pharmacies run on set procedures for safety and privacy, so valuing clear steps matches the work. A values question has no single right answer, but your picks should fit the job you applied for and line up with your work style answers.

How the CVS assessment is scored, and what happens next

CVS does not publish a passing score and does not give applicants their score. In its own VJT guide for pharmacy intern applicants, CVS called the VJT one of many sources it uses to screen and rank applicants: depending on who else applies, a strong score may not lead to an offer and a moderate one sometimes will. Availability, work history, the background check and the interview count too.

In practice it works as a screen. HireVue tells the recruiter as soon as you finish. One candidate on a pharmacy forum described rejection emails from every job applied to after a weak VJT, and a pharmacy employee said technician applicants who fail it do not show up as applicants at all (candidate reports). If you move on, CVS contacts you about a phone call or video interview.

Track everything in Candidate Home under My Applications, where offers also appear. CVS says recruiters cannot give individual feedback because of how many people apply, so a decline will not come with a reason.

How to prepare for the CVS assessment

  1. Step 1

Find the task in Candidate Home

After you apply, sign in to the CVS Workday candidate portal and open the VJT task on Candidate Home. If a page looks wrong, HireVue suggests switching devices or browsers (Chrome works best), clearing the cache, or setting browser zoom to 90% or lower.

  2. Step 2

Set aside an hour with sound on

Each page plays a short audio clip, so use headphones in a quiet place, and in Safari allow auto-play. If you need an accommodation, contact CVS Colleague Relations at ColleagueRelations@CVSHealth.com or 888-694-7287 before you start.

  3. Step 3

Learn the CVS order of priorities

Most scenarios reward the same order: keep the patient safe, protect privacy, send medicine questions to the pharmacist, then serve the customer quickly and kindly. Watch the job preview with that order in mind.

  4. Step 4

    Practice the formats first

Most and least likely picks and paired work style statements feel strange the first time. Work through the examples above, then try OphyAI's free 3-question sample or a practice test of 5, 10 or 20 questions that explains why each option is better or worse.

Is the CVS assessment proctored, and what does it record?

Neither CVS nor HireVue describes a live proctor, webcam check or screen recording for the VJT. What is recorded: your answers, the moment you finish (HireVue notifies the recruiter right away) and, on the pharmacy intern version, your speed on one scored section. HireVue lists a webcam and microphone only for parts that record video or voice answers, and says such recordings are kept no more than 3 years.

Timing and retakes: CVS has said the VJT is not timed and will not time out, and that you can exit and come back with the emailed link, which can take up to 24 hours to arrive. One Reddit commenter says some technician applicants failed because the VJT timed out, so finish in one sitting if you can (candidate report). Once you submit, CVS's older pages said you cannot retake it for six months. HireVue cannot reset a VJT itself; any reset request goes to CVS.

CVS assessment answers, AI help and cheating

Are there CVS assessment answers online?

Sites sell "CVS Virtual Job Tryout answers" and some videos claim to show them, but the VJT is built from scenarios where every response is possible and you pick your most and least likely, plus work style pairs that check whether you answer consistently. A memorized list does not carry over well to new wording. The examples on this page are our own, written in the same formats. For the scenarios on your screen, OphyAI Customer Service shows the best picks and why as each one loads.

Can AI help on the CVS assessment?

Yes, on the scenario and work style parts. OphyAI Customer Service reads each VJT question on your screen in Chrome, Edge or the Mac and Windows desktop app and shows the most and least likely picks, or a consistent work style choice, in seconds. It also has practice tests in the same formats. It is not built for the Accuracy Checking exercise, where you enter or check prescription data, or for questions about your own work history.

Can CVS tell if you use AI on the assessment?

Neither CVS nor HireVue says the VJT uses a webcam, a live proctor or screen recording. What they describe recording is your answers, when you finish (HireVue tells the recruiter right away) and, on the pharmacy intern version, your speed on one section. Know the product limits: it does not work inside lockdown or proctored browsers, it does not take typing-speed tests, and hiding a window from screen share does not hide it from a webcam, a person in the room, or proctoring software.

Compare every platform: Can online assessments detect AI?

OphyAI Customer Service and the CVS assessment

OphyAI Customer Service reads each question of an online customer service assessment on your screen and shows the best answer in a small window only you can see. Practice mode gives you realistic mock tests that explain why each option is better or worse.

Use OphyAI Customer Service on your real CVS Virtual Job Tryout, not just to practice. Share the VJT tab once in Chrome or Edge on a computer, or run it in the OphyAI desktop app for Mac and Windows. Each scenario is read as it appears and answered in seconds: the most and least likely picks for patient and customer situations, and work style choices kept consistent across the test, in a small window only you can see.

It is not built for the Accuracy Checking exercise, where you type or check prescription data, or for the questions about your own work history, so do those parts yourself. A live session uses 15 credits and stays open 2 hours, enough for a VJT you finish in one sitting. Customer Service is on the Premium plan ($59 a month, 500 credits).

  • Best response

Pick the single best way to handle the customer.

  • Most and least effective

Two picks per scenario: the most and the least effective response.

  • Rate each response

CVS assessment questions

CVS told pharmacy intern applicants to set aside up to an hour, and a store manager candidate on Glassdoor said it took almost an hour. CVS has said the VJT is not timed and will not cut you off, though one section scores speed. You can exit and come back with the emailed link, but finishing in one sitting is easier.

CVS does not publish a pass mark or share scores. It calls the VJT one of several things it uses to screen and rank applicants, along with availability, work history, the background check and the interview. Candidates who do poorly report rejection emails soon after, so treat it as a screen you need to clear.

CVS gives no timeline. HireVue alerts the recruiter as soon as you finish, and a work-from-home customer service candidate on Glassdoor said a recruiter called a few days after the VJT. Check Candidate Home, then My Applications, for your status. Offers arrive there too, never by chat or direct email.

CVS's current FAQ does not say. Its older VJT pages said that once you submit, you cannot retake it or get an accommodation for six months, and candidates still describe a six-month wait. HireVue cannot reset a VJT; only CVS can approve a reset, for example after a technical problem.

HireVue says the VJT works on phones, tablets and computers, but it needs at least a 1024 x 768 screen, and HireVue's fix for many display problems is switching to a computer. A laptop or desktop is the easier choice, and it is the only way to use OphyAI Customer Service, which runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer or in the Mac and Windows desktop app.

CVS has not published the technician version. Its pharmacy intern VJT had six parts: a job preview, patient scenarios with most and least likely picks, prescription accuracy checking, what you value, work style pairs and your work history. A candidate on a pharmacy forum described a section where you check a prescription label: drug name, dose, strength, refills and prescriber.

If you move forward, CVS contacts you about next steps, usually a phone call or video interview. Offers appear in Candidate Home in Workday. Before you start, there is a background check and I-9 paperwork, and a third-party agent completes Section 2 of the I-9 with you by video. If you are declined, CVS says recruiters cannot give individual feedback.

HireVue. CVS's VJT help link goes to HireVue's candidate support desk, and HireVue calls the Virtual Job Tryout a HireVue assessment. It was first built by Shaker, the help desk CVS named in 2018. Shaker merged with Montage to form Modern Hire in 2019, and HireVue bought Modern Hire in May 2023.
