The Saville Assessment: Swift Aptitude Tests and Wave Explained

Saville Assessment's best-known hiring tests are the Swift aptitude tests. Swift Analysis Aptitude covers verbal, numerical and diagrammatic reasoning, and Swift Executive Aptitude covers verbal, numerical and abstract reasoning. In Saville's practice versions, each part is two separately timed sections of 4 questions, with 3 minutes per section (2 minutes for abstract). Questions come from randomized banks, the tests check for AI use, and unusual answer patterns are flagged to the employer, who may retest you.

Saville assessment question types

Swift tests combine short sections of different reasoning types. Full single-area tests also exist and run longer.

Verbal reasoning

A short passage, then statements you mark true, false or not possible to say from the passage, plus some four-option questions.

Tip: "Not possible to say" is right whenever the passage does not settle it. Leave outside knowledge out.

Numerical reasoning

Questions on tables and charts that need calculation. Saville recommends a calculator, pen and paper.

Tip: Note the units and time periods in the table before you calculate.

Diagrammatic reasoning (Swift Analysis)

Logic questions presented as diagrams of shapes and symbols, part of Swift Analysis Aptitude.

Tip: Work out each rule on its own before you combine them.

Abstract reasoning (Swift Executive)

Find the pattern in sets of shapes, in quick sections of 4 questions with 2 minutes each in the practice version.

Tip: Compare shapes one feature at a time: count, size, shading, position.

Wave personality

Wave Professional Styles (about 35 minutes) or Focus Styles (about 13 minutes): you rate statements, then rank any you rated the same.

Tip: There are no right answers. Rate honestly; you will then rank any statements you rated the same.

How Saville scores your tests

Saville gives each candidate a randomized set of questions with the difficulty controlled at every stage, and uses item response theory to put every score on the same scale. Your result is compared against people in similar roles, and employers set their cutoffs as percentiles.

Whether you see your results or get feedback is up to the organization that invited you, and so are retakes.

How to prepare for the Saville assessment

  1. Step 1

Use Saville's 19 free practice tests

Saville's practice page has free timed tests, including Swift Analysis and Swift Executive, with no sign-up, and you can retake them as often as you like.

  2. Step 2

    Practice in four-question bursts

Sections are 4 questions in 2 or 3 minutes. Practice short, timed sets so the pace feels normal.

  3. Step 3

    Use the section timer well

You can move between questions within a section, so answer the ones you are sure of first, then go back.

  4. Step 4

    Check your device

Most Saville tests work on a phone, but Swift Analysis does not, so use a computer and have a calculator ready.

Is the Saville assessment proctored, and can it detect cheating?

Saville tells candidates on the test itself that "advanced checks are built into the assessment to monitor your completion and detect the potential use of AI." Randomized item banks and response-pattern checks flag candidates who may need to be retested, and the flag goes to the employer, not to you.

Employers can also add remote supervision, which records your webcam and screen and is reviewed by a provider or flagged automatically.

Saville assessment answers, AI help and cheating

Are there Saville test answers online?

No. Saville gives each candidate a randomized set of questions from its banks. For the question on your screen, OphyAI Aptitude Test shows the answer and a one-line reason.

Can AI help on Saville tests?

On the verbal, numerical and abstract questions, yes: they are multiple choice, which OphyAI Aptitude Test was built for, and Auto answers each one as it loads within the short timed sections.

Can Saville detect AI?

Saville says advanced checks are built into the assessment to detect the potential use of AI, and unusual answer patterns are flagged to the employer, who can retest you. Employers can also add webcam and screen-recording supervision. OphyAI's popup is hidden from screen sharing and recording, but not from a webcam, a person in the room, proctoring software that inspects your computer, or a supervised retest.

OphyAI Desktop for Mac and Windows

OphyAI Aptitude Test and the Saville assessment

Aptitude Test mode in the OphyAI desktop app reads each multiple-choice question on your screen and shows the answer, with a one-line reason, in a small popup only you can see.

Use OphyAI Aptitude Test on your real Saville assessment, not just for practice. Start a test in the desktop app, open the Saville assessment and turn on Auto: each question is answered as it loads, with the option to pick and a one-line reason, in a popup that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording. Or press Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A on any question.

It fits Saville's verbal, numerical and abstract multiple-choice questions. Saville says its tests check for AI use, and flagged candidates can be retested.
