The Aon (cut-e) Assessment: Tests, Timing and How to Prepare

Aon assessments, formerly cut-e, are short online tests employers send in sets of up to five, most under 15 minutes each. The best known are scales numerical (12 minutes, 37 statements) and scales verbal (12 minutes, 49 statements), where you mark each statement true, false or cannot say and are not expected to finish. Unlike many tests, Aon usually deducts points for wrong answers, so blind guessing can hurt. Questions are generated automatically, some tests are adaptive, and you may repeat a module at interview.

Aon assessment question types

Aon's candidate page lists 17 tests and questionnaires. These are the ones most employers send.

scales numerical

Tables and charts followed by statements you mark true, false or cannot say from the data: 37 statements in 12 minutes.

Tip: Accuracy beats speed here because wrong answers cost points. Skip a statement you cannot check rather than guess.

scales verbal

Short texts followed by statements you mark true, false or cannot say: 49 statements in 12 minutes.

Tip: "Cannot say" means the text does not settle it. Keep outside knowledge out of it.

AP Reasoning and scales ix, clx, cls

Pattern and rule-finding with figures or symbols. AP Reasoning has 10 adaptive questions with 2 minutes 30 seconds each.

Tip: Track one change at a time: position, rotation, count, color.

gapChallenge and switchChallenge

Gamified deductive tests, 6 minutes each, that give you a new puzzle every time you finish one. gapChallenge asks which shape fills the gap in a grid where no shape repeats in a row or column; switchChallenge asks for the code that turns one row of shapes into another.

Tip: Watch Aon's practice screencast for each one first, so you spend the 6 minutes solving rather than learning the rules.

Personality and situational judgment

ADEPT-15, about 30 minutes to rate 100 work-style statements and usually untimed, and chatAssess, a gamified situational judgment test.

Tip: There are no right answers to memorize. Answer consistently and as yourself.

How Aon scores your tests

Aon usually adds points for each correct answer and deducts points for each wrong one, which is different from tests like the CCAT or TestGorilla. On the scales tests you are not expected to finish, so a careful, accurate pace scores better than racing.

Employers see a raw score, a percentile and a T-score (a standard score where 50 is average) against a norm group, plus speed and accuracy ratings. Each test has a candidate feedback report, but the employer decides whether to share it. Aon says data is usually deleted after 12 months.

How to prepare for the Aon assessment

  1. Step 1

Watch Aon's screencast for each test

Aon's preparation page has a short video for every test and 10 free practice-task PDFs. The gamified tests in particular make much more sense after one viewing.

  2. Step 2

Practice true, false or cannot say on data

For scales numerical and verbal, drill judging statements against a table or a text. Speed comes from reading the question first, then finding only the numbers it needs.

  3. Step 3

    Do not guess blindly

Because wrong answers usually cost points, answer what you can check and move past what you cannot.

  4. Step 4

Use a PC and have a calculator ready

Aon recommends a PC or laptop even though phones work. You cannot pause once a test starts, so set aside quiet time for the whole set.

Is the Aon assessment proctored, and can it detect cheating?

Aon builds its tests with item generators, so candidates get different questions, which Aon says counters cheating and learning effects. Several tests are adaptive. If you are invited to interview after the online test, Aon says you should expect to complete a repeat module.

Aon also sells remote proctoring with photo checks, which the employer can make mandatory. Aon has not published anything specific about AI tools.

Aon assessment answers, AI help and cheating

Are there Aon (cut-e) test answers online?

No. Aon builds its tests with item generators, so candidates get different questions, and several tests are adaptive. For the statement on your screen, OphyAI Aptitude Test shows whether it is true, false or cannot say, with a one-line reason.

Can AI help on Aon tests?

On scales numerical and verbal, yes: they are true, false or cannot say questions, which OphyAI Aptitude Test was built for. Because Aon usually deducts points for wrong answers, a reason you can check matters. The gamified challenges are interactive puzzles, not multiple choice.

Can Aon detect cheating?

Aon uses item generators and adaptive tests, may give you a repeat module at interview, and sells remote proctoring with photo checks that employers can make mandatory. Aon has published nothing specific about AI tools. OphyAI's popup is hidden from screen sharing and recording, but not from a webcam, a person in the room, proctoring software that inspects your computer, or a supervised retest.

Compare every platform: Can online assessments detect AI?

OphyAI Desktop for Mac and Windows

OphyAI Aptitude Test and the Aon assessment

Aptitude Test mode in the OphyAI desktop app reads each multiple-choice question on your screen and shows the answer, with a one-line reason, in a small popup only you can see.

Use OphyAI Aptitude Test on your real Aon assessment, not just for practice. Start a test in the desktop app, open the Aon assessment and turn on Auto: each question is answered as it loads, with the option to pick and a one-line reason, in a popup that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording. Or press Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A on any question.

It fits scales numerical and verbal, where you mark statements true, false or cannot say, not the gamified challenges. Aon may ask you to repeat a module at interview.
