The HackerRank Test: Format, Scoring and Proctoring

A HackerRank test is an online coding assessment a company sends you, usually as the first screen before a live HackerRank interview. There is no standard test: the company picks the questions, the time limit and the allowed languages, and the login page shows them. Coding questions are scored by how many test cases your code passes, including hidden ones, so partial credit is normal. Copy and paste tracking, tab tracking and a code-similarity check are on by default, and HackerRank does not send results to candidates.

HackerRank test question types

HackerRank lists 18 question types for candidates. These are the ones most software engineering tests use.

Coding problems

Write a function that passes a set of test cases. Some cases are visible, others are hidden, and each can carry its own points.

Tip: Handle edge cases (empty input, one element, very large input) before you optimize.

SQL and database

Write queries against a given schema, scored by whether your output matches the expected result.

Tip: Check joins and NULL handling first; a query can look right and still drop rows.

Multiple choice

Concept questions on a language, data structures, complexity or a framework.

Tip: Trace the code on paper for "what does this print" questions rather than guessing from memory.

Front-end, back-end and full-stack

Project-style tasks in a real environment, such as building a component or fixing an endpoint.

Tip: Read the provided tests or spec first and make those pass before adding anything extra.

Code review and debugging

Find and fix the bug, or review a pull request and comment on what is wrong.

Tip: Say why it is wrong, not only where. Explaining the cause shows you understood it.

Live interview

HackerRank Interviews put you in a shared editor with an interviewer, often after you pass the test.

Tip: Talk through your plan before you type so the interviewer can follow your reasoning.

How HackerRank scores your test

Each coding question is scored by the test cases your code passes. You can get full, partial or no credit, hidden test cases count, and running your code to check it does not affect your score. Run and submit every question before time runs out.

HackerRank does not send test reports to candidates. The company sees your score and integrity signals and decides whether to share anything, and whether to invite you to a retake. HackerRank's own skills certifications are different: you can retake most of them after 30 days.

How to prepare for the HackerRank test

  1. Step 1

    Read the login page carefully

It shows the number of questions, the time limit, the allowed languages and which integrity features are on. That tells you exactly what you are preparing for.

  2. Step 2

    Take the official sample test

HackerRank's free sample test and the "Try Sample Test" button on your login page show the editor, the run button and how test cases appear, so nothing is new on the day.

  3. Step 3

    Practice under the real clock

Work through the Interview Preparation Kit by topic, then do mixed sets with a timer. Aim to pass the visible cases fast, then spend the rest on edge cases.

  4. Step 4

    Set up a clean laptop

Use Chrome, Firefox or Edge on a PC or laptop, close other apps, use one monitor, and allow the webcam if the test asks for it.

Want problems to work through? HackerRank practice questions with solutions

Is the HackerRank test proctored, and can it detect cheating?

Some checks are on by default for every test: copy and paste tracking, tab proctoring that logs how often and how long you leave the test window, and MOSS, which compares your code with other candidates' submissions.

Companies can add more. AI plagiarism detection uses a machine-learning model to flag likely outside help; you must consent when it is on, and HackerRank says flags are right 85% of the time. Image proctoring takes webcam photos every few seconds. Secure Mode forces full screen, blocks pasting from outside and allows one monitor. Proctor Mode adds screen sharing with a recording of your whole browser screen and AI review. Desktop App Mode runs the test in HackerRank's own app, which blocks AI apps (it names Cluely) and virtual machines.

Companies can turn on HackerRank's own AI assistant for a test: Guarded mode will not write full solutions, Unguarded mode can, and the evaluator sees your chats.

HackerRank test answers, AI help and cheating

Are there HackerRank test answers online?

Not for your company's test. The company picks the questions, hidden test cases decide the score, and MOSS compares your code with other candidates' submissions. Coding Copilot reads the exact problem on your screen and gives you an approach, complexity notes and working code for it.

How does OphyAI work in a HackerRank interview?

Coding Copilot in the OphyAI desktop app works during live coding interviews: it transcribes the spoken question, reads the problem on screen with one hotkey, and shows an approach, complexity notes and working code in a window hidden from screen sharing. It does not hide from a webcam or from HackerRank's own tracking.

Can AI help on a HackerRank test?

Coding Copilot in the OphyAI desktop app reads the problem on your screen with Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A and returns an approach, complexity notes and working code in an overlay that screen sharing and recording leave out. It does not hide from a webcam or from HackerRank's own tracking. Separately, companies can turn on HackerRank's own AI assistant for a test, and the instructions say so before you start.

Can HackerRank detect cheating?

It tracks copy and paste, how often and how long you leave the test window, and code similarity with other candidates by default. Companies can add AI plagiarism detection, webcam photos, full-screen Secure Mode, Proctor Mode with screen recording, and a locked-down desktop app that blocks AI apps. The OphyAI window is hidden from screen sharing and recording, but not from a webcam, a person watching, or the platform's own keystroke, paste and tab tracking.

OphyAI Coding Copilot and the HackerRank test

Coding Copilot in the OphyAI desktop app reads the coding problem on your screen with one hotkey and returns an approach, complexity notes and working code in your language.

Use OphyAI Coding Copilot in your HackerRank interview, not just to practice. In a live HackerRank Interview, press Space or Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L and it transcribes the question your interviewer asks out loud; press Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A and it reads the problem on your screen. The approach, complexity notes and working code appear as a card in a floating overlay that your screen share leaves out, on top of a full-screen editor and without taking the keyboard from it. Follow-ups remember the problem, so "now make it faster" updates the same code.

What the platform watches: HackerRank tracks copy and paste and tab switches by default, some companies add webcam photos or full-screen Secure Mode, and Desktop App Mode blocks AI apps outright. The login page shows which features are on.

  • Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A snaps the problem window, even when other windows cover it, and Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + S lets you drag a box around part of the screen. In a live interview, Space or Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L transcribes the question the interviewer asks out loud.

  • Answers show as a card in a floating overlay that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording. It stays on top of a full-screen editor or browser and opens without taking the keyboard from your editor.

  • Each answer card shows how OphyAI read the problem, what to say first, the code with line numbers, a dry run with edge cases, and the Big O. Follow-ups remember the problem, so "now handle duplicates" updates the same code.

Free download. Coding Interview is on the Premium plan ($59 a month, 500 credits) and uses 15 credits per session. See everything it does

What it is hidden from, and what it is not

Hiding a window from screen share does not hide it from a webcam, a person watching, keystroke and paste history, tab or focus tracking, or proctoring software.

HackerRank test questions

There is no standard length. The company sets the number of questions and the time limit, and both are shown on your test login page before you start.

Only in Proctor Mode or Desktop App Mode, where screen sharing is required and your full browser screen is recorded. The login page tells you which features are on.

Yes. Coding questions are scored by the test cases you pass, so passing some cases earns some points. Hidden test cases count too.

Not from HackerRank. It does not send test reports to candidates; the company decides whether to share results.

Only if the company re-invites you. There is no HackerRank-wide waiting period for company tests.

No. HackerRank requires a PC or laptop; phones and tablets are not supported.
