The Visa OA: CodeSignal Format, Score and Rules

The Visa OA is an online coding test on CodeSignal that Visa sends for many engineering roles. Visa says it partners with CodeSignal, that your score shows on screen when you finish, and that your recruiter follows up with next steps. Candidates report 4 questions (one report says 5) in about 70 minutes, rising from easy to hard, which matches CodeSignal's General Coding Assessment. Candidates also report that at least your screen and microphone are recorded. After the OA, Visa says most candidates have two to four interview rounds of 30 to 60 minutes.

Visa OA question types

Visa does not publish its questions, and candidates describe data structures and algorithms problems that get harder as you go. CodeSignal says GCA questions move from foundational to advanced ones that need optimization. These are the skills that covers.

Warm-up implementation

Turn a short written spec into correct code: strings, arrays, loops and conditions, with every rule in the spec handled.

Tip: Visa's own advice: start with the easier questions to build momentum, then come back to the tougher ones.

Data structures and simulation

Follow rules step by step or organize data, for example grouping card transactions by merchant and flagging any merchant whose total crosses a limit.

Tip: Pick the data structure first (a hash map, a set, a sorted list), then write the loop around it.

Optimization

The last questions are harder: a correct but slow answer can fail large hidden test cases, so you need sorting, two pointers, prefix sums or a smarter structure.

Tip: Submit a working brute force first. CodeSignal keeps your best submission, so improving it later costs nothing.

Case study (some roles)

Visa says some roles, such as Visa Consulting & Analytics, get a case study instead: payment trends or transaction data, with a presentation of your recommendations.

Tip: Focus on the core question and keep your recommendations practical, as Visa suggests.

Live technical interviews

After the OA, Visa's interviews run 30 to 60 minutes each with the hiring manager and team members, and technical rounds can include coding exercises.

Tip: Visa says to talk through your solution before writing code and to run your code early and often.

How the Visa OA is scored

Visa says your score appears on screen as soon as you finish, you may also get a confirmation email, and your recruiter follows up with the outcome and any next steps. Visa publishes no passing score. If the test is a certified CodeSignal assessment like the GCA, scores run from 200 to 600 and CodeSignal verifies proctored results within 1 to 3 business days.

CodeSignal scores each question by the test cases your code passes, including hidden ones, and keeps your highest-scoring submission, so a partial solution still earns points.

If you already have an eligible certified result, CodeSignal may let you share it instead of retaking; each company sets how old a result it accepts, 6 months by default and up to 3 years. Retakes always need a new invite, and CodeSignal's cooldowns limit how often you can test. Visa does not publish its own rules for either.

How to prepare for the Visa OA

  1. Step 1

Take one or two CodeSignal practice tests

Visa recommends at least one or two practice assessments first, and there is no limit on how many you take. Companies cannot see your practice activity.

  2. Step 2

    Practice the easy-to-hard pace

Candidates report about 70 minutes for 4 questions. Start with the easier questions, as Visa suggests, so the harder ones get most of your time.

  3. Step 3

    Check your setup

Visa asks for at least 500 kb/s down and up and an up-to-date supported browser. Use a laptop or desktop, close other apps, and allow screen and microphone access.

  4. Step 4

Know what to do if it breaks

If CodeSignal freezes or errors, take screenshots, note the time and try to resume. If it keeps happening, contact CodeSignal Support and tell your Visa recruiter.

Is the Visa OA proctored, and can it detect cheating?

Visa does not describe proctoring for its OA, and candidate reports differ. One says the test "is not proctored but is recorded with microphone and screen capture," while others describe camera, microphone and screen sharing. A proctored certified CodeSignal test records your camera, microphone and screen and checks a government photo ID; CodeSignal's team reviews the recording and deletes it within 15 days.

Employers also see a Suspicion Score for each question, built from signals like code similarity, pasting, copying the question text and session replay, and an "Integrity Flagged" status when CodeSignal finds a problem.

Visa OA answers, AI help and cheating

Are there Visa CodeSignal answers online?

Lists of reported "Visa OA questions" circulate, but CodeSignal says the GCA draws on over 628,000 variations, hidden test cases decide your score, and the Suspicion Score checks code similarity. Coding Copilot reads the exact problem on your screen and gives you an approach, a dry run and working code for it.

How does OphyAI work on the Visa CodeSignal test?

OphyAI Coding Copilot works on the test itself: one hotkey reads the problem on your screen, and the approach, complexity notes and working code appear in an overlay that screen sharing and recording leave out. In Visa's live interviews, Space or Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L transcribes the question your interviewer asks out loud. It does not hide from a webcam or from CodeSignal's own checks.

Can Visa's test detect cheating?

Candidates report that the Visa OA records at least your screen and microphone, and some report camera proctoring with a photo ID check. Employers also see a per-question Suspicion Score built from code similarity, pasting and session replay, plus an Integrity Flagged status. The OphyAI window is hidden from screen sharing and recording, but not from a webcam, a person watching, or the platform's own keystroke, paste and tab tracking.

OphyAI Desktop for Mac and Windows

OphyAI Coding Copilot and the Visa OA

Coding Copilot in the OphyAI desktop app reads the coding problem on your screen with one hotkey and returns an approach, complexity notes and working code in your language.

Use OphyAI Coding Copilot on your real Visa CodeSignal test, not just to practice. Press Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A and it snaps the problem window, even when other windows cover it, or press Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + S to drag a box around just the problem. The answer appears as a card in a floating overlay that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording: how OphyAI read the problem, the code with line numbers, a dry run with edge cases, and the Big O. Follow-ups remember the problem, so "now make it faster" updates the same code.

In Visa's live interviews after the OA, press Space or Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L and it transcribes the question your interviewer asks out loud. On the test itself, candidates report that at least your screen and microphone are recorded, and employers see a Suspicion Score for each question.

  • Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A snaps the problem window, even when other windows cover it, and Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + S lets you drag a box around part of the screen. In a live interview, Space or Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L transcribes the question the interviewer asks out loud.

  • Answers show as a card in a floating overlay that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording. It stays on top of a full-screen editor or browser and opens without taking the keyboard from your editor.

  • Each answer card shows how OphyAI read the problem, what to say first, the code with line numbers, a dry run with edge cases, and the Big O. Follow-ups remember the problem, so "now handle duplicates" updates the same code.

What it is hidden from, and what it is not

Hiding a window from screen share does not hide it from a webcam, a person watching, keystroke and paste history, tab or focus tracking, or proctoring software.

Visa OA questions

Visa does not publish the length. Candidates report about 70 minutes for 4 questions, which matches CodeSignal's General Coding Assessment. The start screen shows your exact time and question count.

CodeSignal: Visa says it partners with CodeSignal for technical assessments. A few candidates report a HackerRank test instead, so check who sent your invite.

Yes. Visa says your score is displayed on screen when you finish, you may also get a confirmation email, and your recruiter follows up with the outcome.

Visa publishes no passing score. Certified CodeSignal scores run from 200 to 600, and each company sets its own bar for each role.

Retakes need a new invite and follow CodeSignal's cooldowns. If you have an eligible certified result, CodeSignal may let you share it instead; each company sets how old a result it accepts, 6 months by default. Visa does not publish its own rules.

Your recruiter follows up. Visa says most candidates then have two to four interview rounds of 30 to 60 minutes, mostly virtual, with the hiring manager and team members. New grad candidates report a hiring manager call, technical rounds and, for some, a team match.

The one you are fastest in. The GCA offers 38 languages, including Python 3, Java, C++, JavaScript and Go. For the interviews, Visa suggests brushing up on the languages in the job description.

Visa says to take screenshots, note the exact time and try to resume. If the problem continues, contact CodeSignal Support with your name, your email, the company (Visa), and the test name and time, and tell your Visa recruiter.
