The TikTok OA (ByteDance OA): What to Expect and How to Prepare

The TikTok OA, also called the ByteDance OA, is the online coding assessment TikTok sends for technical roles after a resume screen and before interviews. TikTok says it tests your programming skills and knowledge of common algorithms and data structures, that you may use the language of your choice, and that you get a preparation kit with sample questions first. TikTok does not publish the platform or the length. Candidates report both HackerRank and CodeSignal, with recent reports leaning toward CodeSignal, and 2 to 4 coding problems in about 60 to 120 minutes, sometimes with multiple-choice questions. If you pass, TikTok contacts you when it is ready to interview; if not, you should get a rejection email.

TikTok OA question types

TikTok only says the OA covers programming and common algorithms and data structures. The rest of this list comes from candidate reports, in our own words.

Algorithms and data structures

Write code that solves a problem fast enough for large inputs. TikTok names common algorithms and data structures as the focus.

Tip: Submit a correct version first, then optimize. On test-case scoring, a partial solution still earns points.

Four-question CodeSignal set (recent reports)

Several 2025 and 2026 reports describe a CodeSignal General Coding Assessment. CodeSignal says the GCA is 4 questions of varying difficulty in 70 minutes, scored 200 to 600.

Tip: Clear the first two questions quickly so the last two get most of your time. Your best submission counts.

Multiple choice (some versions)

Candidates report short computer science multiple-choice questions in some versions, mostly in 2025. A 2026 prep guide says recent tests dropped them.

Tip: A quick review of operating systems, networking basics and your main language covers most of it.

Live coding rounds after the OA

Interviews with the hiring team, mostly online. Candidates report live coding in a shared editor such as HackerRank.

Tip: Talk through your plan before you type so the interviewer can follow your reasoning.

How the TikTok OA is scored, and what happens next

TikTok publishes no passing score. On both platforms candidates report, points come from the test cases your code passes, including hidden ones, so partial credit counts. A CodeSignal General Coding Assessment is scored from 200 to 600.

If you pass, TikTok says it will reach out when it is ready to invite you to interviews, and warns that many people pass while interviewer slots are limited, so it cannot promise a timeline. If you do not pass, you should get a rejection email. One 2025 US candidate reports a perfect CodeSignal score followed by a rejection about a week later, so a high score does not guarantee an interview.

TikTok says the whole process, from resume to offer, usually takes about one month, and most interviews are online. It does not give individual interview feedback, but it does tell you the outcome.

How to prepare for the TikTok OA

  1. Step 1

    Use the preparation kit

TikTok sends sample challenge questions before the real test so you can learn the platform. Do every one of them, and note whether it is HackerRank or CodeSignal: that tells you what the real test tracks.

  2. Step 2

    Practice on a timer

Do timed sets of 2 to 4 problems in 60 to 120 minutes, the range candidates report. If your kit is CodeSignal, run at least one full set of 4 questions in 70 minutes.

  3. Step 3

    Review CS basics

Some versions add multiple-choice questions on computer science basics. A short review of operating systems, networking and your main language covers most of it.

  4. Step 4

    Plan your time and window

Open the invitation early, check the deadline, and take the test in one quiet sitting on a laptop or desktop. If something outside your control stops you, email the Early Careers team.

Is the TikTok OA proctored, and can it detect cheating?

TikTok does not publish how it proctors its OA. Your invitation and the test platform's start screen show what is recorded.

If the test runs on HackerRank, copy and paste tracking, tab tracking and MOSS code-similarity checks are on by default, and companies can add AI plagiarism detection, webcam photos, full-screen Secure Mode, Proctor Mode with screen recording, and a locked-down desktop app. Companies can also turn on HackerRank's own AI assistant for a test.

If you get a CodeSignal General Coding Assessment, as recent reports describe, proctoring records your camera, microphone and screen, and you show a photo ID. A 2026 prep guide based on candidate reports says recent TikTok tests ask for your camera and a screen share.

TikTok OA answers, AI help and cheating

Are there TikTok OA answers online?

Lists of reported TikTok and ByteDance OA questions circulate, but you cannot know which problems you will get, hidden test cases decide the score, and both HackerRank and CodeSignal check your code for similarity with other submissions. Coding Copilot reads the exact problem on your screen and gives you an approach, a dry run and working code for it.

How does OphyAI work on the TikTok OA?

OphyAI Coding Copilot works on the coding questions: one hotkey reads the problem on your screen, and the approach, complexity notes and working code appear in an overlay that screen sharing and recording leave out. In the live TikTok interviews that follow, Space or Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L transcribes the question your interviewer asks out loud. It does not hide from a webcam or from the platform's own tracking.

Can TikTok's OA detect cheating?

TikTok does not say what it checks. The CodeSignal GCA, which recent candidates report, records your camera, microphone and screen, and employers see a Suspicion Score built from signals like code similarity and pasting. HackerRank tracks copy and paste, tab switches and code similarity by default, and companies can add webcam photos, AI plagiarism detection and screen recording. The OphyAI window is hidden from screen sharing and recording, but not from a webcam, a person watching, or the platform's own keystroke, paste and tab tracking.

OphyAI Desktop for Mac and Windows

OphyAI Coding Copilot and the TikTok OA

Coding Copilot in the OphyAI desktop app reads the coding problem on your screen with one hotkey and returns an approach, complexity notes and working code in your language.

Use OphyAI Coding Copilot on your real TikTok OA, not just to practice. Press Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A and it snaps the problem window, even when other windows cover it, or press Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + S to drag a box around just the problem. The answer appears as a card in a floating overlay that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording: how OphyAI read the problem, the code with line numbers, a dry run with edge cases, and the Big O. In the live TikTok interviews that follow, press Space or Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L and it transcribes the question your interviewer asks out loud.

What each platform watches: the CodeSignal GCA, which recent candidates report, records your camera, microphone and screen. HackerRank tracks copy and paste, tab switches and code similarity by default, and some tests add webcam photos or full-screen modes.

  • Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A snaps the problem window, even when other windows cover it, and Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + S lets you drag a box around part of the screen. In a live interview, Space or Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L transcribes the question the interviewer asks out loud.

  • Answers show as a card in a floating overlay that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording. It stays on top of a full-screen editor or browser and opens without taking the keyboard from your editor.

  • Each answer card shows how OphyAI read the problem, what to say first, the code with line numbers, a dry run with edge cases, and the Big O. Follow-ups remember the problem, so "now handle duplicates" updates the same code.

What it is hidden from, and what it is not

Hiding a window from screen share does not hide it from a webcam, a person watching, keystroke and paste history, tab or focus tracking, or proctoring software.

TikTok OA questions

TikTok does not publish a length. Candidates report about 60 to 120 minutes for 2 to 4 coding problems; the CodeSignal GCA that recent candidates describe is 70 minutes. Your invitation shows the exact time.

TikTok does not say. Candidates report both HackerRank and CodeSignal, and 2025 and 2026 reports lean toward a CodeSignal General Coding Assessment. The link in your invitation and the preparation kit tell you which.

They follow the same process. ByteDance's careers FAQ describes assessments for technical roles and the one-month timeline in the same words as TikTok's.

Any language you choose. TikTok suggests picking the one that gives you the most optimal solution.

TikTok does not describe a standard retake. Its early careers FAQ says that if unforeseen circumstances stopped you completing the OA, you can email the Early Careers team for your region (ams-earlycareers@tiktok.com for North America).

There is no set timeline. TikTok says it contacts people who pass when it is ready to interview, because many pass and interviewer slots are limited. If you do not pass, you should get a rejection email.

Interviews with the hiring team, with the number of rounds depending on the role, and most of them online. Candidates report live coding in a shared editor. TikTok tells you the outcome but does not give individual feedback.

For early career roles, up to 2 positions per program in each application period (January to June and July to December), counting TikTok and its affiliates worldwide. PhD and Project Intern roles are not limited.

TikTok does not say. A proctored CodeSignal GCA, which recent candidates report, records your camera, and a 2026 prep guide says recent TikTok tests ask for your camera and a screen share. Check your invitation before you start.
