The Goldman Sachs HackerRank Assessment: Format and Rules

The Goldman Sachs HackerRank assessment is the online coding test Goldman Sachs gives Engineering applicants, run on HackerRank. Goldman assigns challenges by role. Everyone takes a 30-minute Software Fundamentals challenge: data structures and algorithms problems in the language of your choice. Engineering applicants add a 45-minute Software Diagnostics challenge, fixing issues in an existing Django, Node.js or Spring Boot app with a limited built-in AI assistant. Quantitative Strategist applicants add a 22-minute multiple-choice math challenge. Goldman's campus team says to expect an update within three weeks.

Goldman Sachs HackerRank assessment question types

Goldman Sachs assigns challenge types based on the role you apply for. These are the three it lists, described in our own words.

Software Fundamentals (30 minutes)

Data structures and algorithms problems in the language you choose, scored by the test cases your code passes. Every candidate gets this one.

Tip: Thirty minutes is short. Get a correct solution passing first, then improve time and space complexity if minutes remain.

Software Diagnostics (45 minutes)

You work inside an existing Django, Node.js or Spring Boot app, find what is broken and fix it, with a limited built-in AI assistant for navigation, syntax and clarifying the task.

Tip: Reproduce the bug before you change anything, and make small, targeted fixes rather than rewriting code.

Math challenge (22 minutes)

Multiple-choice questions on probability, statistics, calculus and linear algebra, for Quantitative Strategist applicants only.

Tip: Review the core formulas the night before and skip any question that stalls you; come back if time allows.

How Goldman Sachs scores the HackerRank assessment

Goldman Sachs says it evaluates your assessment together with the rest of your application, and it does not publish a passing score. On HackerRank, coding questions earn points for each test case passed, including hidden ones, so partial credit is normal and running your code does not change your score.

HackerRank does not send test results to candidates; the company decides what to share. Goldman's campus team says to expect an update within three weeks, and its candidate portal shows your application status.

Many older guides describe a longer test, about two hours of coding followed by an hour of math. Goldman's current guide, published in August 2026, lists the 30, 45 and 22 minute challenges above.

How to prepare for the Goldman Sachs HackerRank assessment

  1. Step 1

    Take Goldman's practice assessment

Goldman links an official HackerRank practice test from its guide. Use it to learn the editor and the run button, on a PC or laptop with Chrome, Firefox or Edge.

  2. Step 2

Review fundamentals for the 30-minute challenge

Goldman says to review data structures, algorithms, and time and space complexity. Practice solving one medium problem in under 30 minutes.

  3. Step 3

    Practice in an existing codebase

For Software Diagnostics, Goldman suggests reading unfamiliar code, debugging, writing tests and making targeted changes. Clone a small Django, Node.js or Spring Boot project and fix bugs in it.

  4. Step 4

    Quant applicants: review the math

If you applied as a Quantitative Strategist, review probability, statistics, calculus and linear algebra, the four areas Goldman lists for the 22-minute challenge.

Is the Goldman Sachs HackerRank assessment proctored, and can it detect cheating?

Goldman Sachs does not publish which proctoring features it turns on. On every HackerRank test, copy and paste tracking, tab tracking and MOSS code-similarity checks are on by default.

Companies can add AI plagiarism detection, webcam photos, full-screen Secure Mode, Proctor Mode with screen recording, or a locked-down desktop app that blocks AI apps. Your test login page shows which ones are on.

The Software Diagnostics challenge includes a limited built-in AI assistant, and HackerRank shows your chats with it to the evaluator.

Goldman Sachs HackerRank assessment answers, AI help and cheating

Are there Goldman Sachs HackerRank answers online?

Reported question lists circulate, but they are not your test: Goldman assigns challenges by role, hidden test cases decide the score, and MOSS compares your code with other candidates' submissions. Coding Copilot reads the problem on your screen and writes a solution for it.

How does OphyAI work on the Goldman Sachs HackerRank?

OphyAI works on the real test: Coding Copilot in the OphyAI desktop app snaps the problem with one hotkey and shows an approach, complexity notes and working code in an overlay that screen sharing and recording leave out. It does not hide from a webcam or from HackerRank's own tracking. Separately, Software Diagnostics has HackerRank's limited built-in assistant, and the evaluator sees your chats with it.

Can Goldman Sachs' HackerRank detect cheating?

HackerRank tracks copy and paste, how often and how long you leave the test window, and code similarity by default. Companies can add AI plagiarism detection, webcam photos, full-screen Secure Mode, screen recording and a locked-down desktop app; Goldman does not say which it uses. The OphyAI window is hidden from screen sharing and recording, but not from a webcam, a person watching, or the platform's own keystroke, paste and tab tracking.

OphyAI Desktop for Mac and Windows

OphyAI Coding Copilot and the Goldman Sachs HackerRank assessment

Coding Copilot in the OphyAI desktop app reads the coding problem on your screen with one hotkey and returns an approach, complexity notes and working code in your language.

Use OphyAI Coding Copilot on your real Goldman Sachs HackerRank assessment, not just to practice. Press Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A and it snaps the problem window, even when other windows cover it, or press Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + S to drag a box around the part you need. The answer shows as a card in a floating overlay that stays on top of a full-screen browser and opens without taking the keyboard from your editor: how it read the problem, code with line numbers, a dry run with edge cases and the Big O. Follow-ups remember the problem.

In a live coding interview later on, Space or Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L transcribes the question your interviewer asks out loud. On the assessment itself, HackerRank tracks copy and paste and tab switches by default.

  • Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A snaps the problem window, even when other windows cover it, and Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + S lets you drag a box around part of the screen. In a live interview, Space or Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L transcribes the question the interviewer asks out loud.

  • Answers show as a card in a floating overlay that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording. It stays on top of a full-screen editor or browser and opens without taking the keyboard from your editor.

  • Each answer card shows how OphyAI read the problem, what to say first, the code with line numbers, a dry run with edge cases, and the Big O. Follow-ups remember the problem, so "now handle duplicates" updates the same code.

What it is hidden from, and what it is not

Hiding a window from screen share does not hide it from a webcam, a person watching, keystroke and paste history, tab or focus tracking, or proctoring software.

Goldman Sachs HackerRank assessment questions

30 minutes for Software Fundamentals, plus 45 minutes for Software Diagnostics if you applied for an Engineering role, plus 22 minutes for the math challenge if you applied as a Quantitative Strategist.

Only for Quantitative Strategist applicants: a 22-minute multiple-choice challenge on probability, statistics, calculus and linear algebra.

A 45-minute task for Engineering roles where you diagnose and fix issues in an existing Django, Node.js or Spring Boot app. A limited built-in AI assistant can help with navigation, syntax and understanding the task, but will not give the full solution.

Software Fundamentals lets you choose your language. Software Diagnostics uses an existing app built with Django (Python), Node.js (JavaScript) or Spring Boot (Java).

Goldman does not say. HackerRank uses the webcam only when the company turns on photo ID, image proctoring, Proctor Mode or its desktop app, and your invite or login page tells you.

Goldman evaluates it with the rest of your application and aims to update you within three weeks. Its student hiring page lists a video interview of about 30 minutes at the same stage, then a Superday of 2 to 5 interviews, depending on the division.

Goldman does not publish a retake policy. On HackerRank, a retake happens only if the company re-invites you.

Not from HackerRank, which does not send reports to candidates. Check Goldman's candidate portal for your application status.
