The Capital One CodeSignal Assessment: Format, Rules and Power Day

The Capital One coding assessment is a 70-minute CodeSignal test with four data structures and algorithms questions. Capital One's recruiters say you get 10 days to start it, you must finish in one sitting once you begin, and it is pass/fail. The format matches CodeSignal's General Coding Assessment (GCA), and candidates report a proctored setup with a photo ID, camera, microphone and screen share. If you pass, the next steps are a hiring manager interview and Power Day, a set of interviews that can include coding, system design, behavioral and case rounds.

Capital One CodeSignal assessment question types

Capital One says all four questions are based on data structures and algorithms. CodeSignal says GCA questions move from foundational ones to harder ones that need optimization. These are the skills that covers, plus what Power Day adds.

Warm-up implementation

The first questions on a GCA-style test: turn a short written spec into correct code with strings, arrays, loops and conditions, handling every rule in the spec.

Tip: Clear these quickly and submit. Every minute saved goes to the last two questions.

Arrays, hash maps and simulation

Follow rules step by step or count and group items, for example tracking which account IDs show up more than once in a stream of events.

Tip: Write a small helper for each rule and test it on a tiny input before you move on.

Optimization

The last questions are harder and need an efficient approach, such as sorting, two pointers, prefix sums or a better data structure, so large hidden test cases do not time out.

Tip: Submit a correct brute force first. Your best submission counts, so improving it afterward costs nothing.

Power Day live coding

For AI and ML roles, Capital One describes 30 minutes of live coding in CodeSignal with an interviewer who asks clarifying questions and drops hints.

Tip: Talk through your plan before you type. Capital One says interviewers look at how well you use their feedback in real time.

System design and case interviews

Power Day can add a system design interview and a case interview built around Capital One products that are publicly available. You do not need a finance background for the case.

Tip: Ask your recruiter which team you will meet. Capital One says the team shapes the questions you get.

How the Capital One CodeSignal assessment is scored

Capital One's recruiters call the assessment pass/fail: "The purpose is to make sure you have a basic fundamental understanding of how to write code." Capital One publishes no cutoff score. Some cutoffs posted online come from CodeSignal's old 600 to 850 scale, which does not match today's 200 to 600 Assessment Score.

CodeSignal scores each question by the test cases your code passes, including hidden ones, and keeps your highest-scoring submission, so a partial solution still earns points. On a certified test like the GCA, CodeSignal verifies proctored results within 1 to 3 business days before the company sees them, and you can see your score in your CodeSignal account.

If you already have an eligible certified result, CodeSignal may let you share it instead of retaking. Each company sets how old a result it accepts, 6 months by default and up to 3 years; Capital One does not publish its setting. Retakes always need a new invite, and CodeSignal's cooldowns limit how often you can test.

How to prepare for the Capital One CodeSignal assessment

  1. Step 1

Start only when you are ready

You get 10 days from the invite, and once you start you must finish in that session. Capital One's recruiters advise starting only when you feel ready.

  2. Step 2

    Do CodeSignal's free practice assessments

They use the same editor and question style, and companies cannot see your activity. Do at least one full timed run of 4 questions in 70 minutes.

  3. Step 3

    Drill data structures and algorithms

Capital One's recruiters sum it up as "Think LeetCode." Practice timed sets of easy and medium problems, then a few hard ones, in the language you are fastest in. If your Python is rusty, they suggest a few days of brushing up.

  4. Step 4

    Prepare the room for proctoring

Use a laptop or desktop with Chrome, Firefox or Edge, have your photo ID ready, close other apps and make sure nobody else is in the room.

Is the Capital One CodeSignal test proctored, and can it detect cheating?

Candidates report that the setup asks you to show your face and a photo ID, then shares your screen, camera and microphone for the whole test. That is how CodeSignal proctors its certified assessments: its team reviews the recording and says it deletes it within 15 days without sharing it with the company. The timer starts only after setup.

Employers also see a Suspicion Score for each question, built from signals like code similarity, pasting, copying the question text and session replay, and an "Integrity Flagged" status when CodeSignal finds a problem.

For the interviews that follow, Capital One requires video for all virtual interviews.

Are there Capital One CodeSignal answers online?

Lists of reported "Capital One CodeSignal questions" circulate, but CodeSignal says the GCA draws on over 628,000 variations, hidden test cases decide your score, and the Suspicion Score checks code similarity. Coding Copilot reads the exact problem on your screen and gives you an approach, a dry run and working code for it.

How does OphyAI work on the Capital One CodeSignal test?

OphyAI Coding Copilot works on the test itself: one hotkey reads the problem on your screen, and the approach, complexity notes and working code appear in an overlay that screen sharing and recording leave out. On Power Day, Space or Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L transcribes the question your interviewer asks out loud. It does not hide from your webcam or from CodeSignal's own checks.

Can Capital One's test detect cheating?

Candidates report a proctored test that records your camera, microphone and screen after a photo ID check, and CodeSignal's team reviews proctored recordings. Employers also see a per-question Suspicion Score built from code similarity, pasting and session replay, plus an Integrity Flagged status. The OphyAI window is hidden from screen sharing and recording, but not from a webcam, a person watching, or the platform's own keystroke, paste and tab tracking.

OphyAI Desktop for Mac and Windows

OphyAI Coding Copilot and the Capital One CodeSignal assessment

Coding Copilot in the OphyAI desktop app reads the coding problem on your screen with one hotkey and returns an approach, complexity notes and working code in your language.

Use OphyAI Coding Copilot on your real Capital One CodeSignal test, not just to practice. Press Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A and it snaps the problem window, even when other windows cover it, or press Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + S to drag a box around just the problem. The answer appears as a card in a floating overlay that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording: how OphyAI read the problem, what to say first, the code with line numbers, a dry run with edge cases, and the Big O. On Power Day, press Space or Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L and it transcribes the question your interviewer asks out loud.

What the test watches: candidates report it records your camera, microphone and screen after a photo ID check, and employers see a Suspicion Score for each question.

OphyAI Aptitude Test mode is not built for Capital One's Virtual Job Tryout. Its scenario and work-style modules ask how you would handle situations and have no single right answer, so answer those yourself.

  • Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A snaps the problem window, even when other windows cover it, and Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + S lets you drag a box around part of the screen. In a live interview, Space or Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L transcribes the question the interviewer asks out loud.

  • Answers show as a card in a floating overlay that macOS and Windows leave out of screen sharing and recording. It stays on top of a full-screen editor or browser and opens without taking the keyboard from your editor.

  • Each answer card shows how OphyAI read the problem, what to say first, the code with line numbers, a dry run with edge cases, and the Big O. Follow-ups remember the problem, so "now handle duplicates" updates the same code.

What it is hidden from, and what it is not

Hiding a window from screen share does not hide it from a webcam, a person watching, keystroke and paste history, tab or focus tracking, or proctoring software.

Capital One CodeSignal assessment questions

70 minutes for 4 questions, in one sitting, according to Capital One's recruiters. The timer starts after the proctoring setup, and you have 10 days from the invite to begin.

Capital One's recruiters say the assessment is pass/fail, and Capital One publishes no cutoff. CodeSignal's certified scores run from 200 to 600; numbers posted online on the old 600 to 850 scale do not compare.

Capital One does not say. Its format, 4 questions in 70 minutes, matches the General Coding Assessment, and candidates report it is the GCA. Your invite and the start screen name the test.

Candidates report that it does: you show your face and a photo ID, then share your camera, microphone and screen for the whole test.

If you have an eligible certified result, CodeSignal may let you share it instead of retaking. Each company sets how old a result it accepts, 6 months by default; Capital One does not publish its setting.

Only with a new invite. Capital One publishes no retake rule, and CodeSignal's cooldowns limit attempts, for example to at most 2 in 30 days and 3 in 180 days for some tests.

The one you are fastest in. The GCA offers 38 languages, including Python 3, Java, C++, JavaScript and Go. Capital One's AI and ML recruiters suggest brushing up on Python if it has been a while.

If you pass, expect a 30-minute interview with the hiring manager, then Power Day. Capital One describes Power Day for AI and ML roles as four hour-long interviews: technical coding (with live coding in CodeSignal), system design, behavioral and a case study, all weighted equally. For other roles it can include job fit, behavioral and case interviews.

No. CodeSignal's proctored assessments cannot be taken on phones or tablets; use a laptop or desktop.
