How to Use an AI Interview Copilot on Mac: 6-Step Setup, 4 Hotkeys
Set up an AI interview copilot on Mac in 6 steps: download for Apple Silicon or Intel, macOS permissions, the 4 hotkeys, 4 layouts and a test call.
Last updated: October 2026
Quick Answer
To use an AI interview copilot on a Mac, install the OphyAI desktop app (it runs on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs and is signed and notarized by Apple), allow the macOS permissions it requests, learn the four hotkeys, pick one of the four layouts, and run a test call before the real interview. The live answer window is excluded from screen sharing and screen recording by macOS, and it hears the interviewer through system audio, with no virtual audio cable. Prefer no install? The web app at app.ophyai.com runs Interview Copilot in Whisper Mode, the browser overlay.
| Step | What you do | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Download the Mac app from ophyai.com/download | 2 minutes |
| 2 | Open it and pass the Gatekeeper check | 1 minute |
| 3 | Allow microphone and audio-recording access if macOS asks | 2 minutes |
| 4 | Learn the four hotkeys | 5 minutes |
| 5 | Pick a layout | 2 minutes |
| 6 | Run a test call on Zoom, Teams or Google Meet | 10 minutes |
What Changes on a Mac
Three things are different on a Mac compared with a browser-only setup or a Windows PC.
Gatekeeper decides what opens. macOS includes Gatekeeper, which Apple describes as a technology “designed to ensure that only trusted software runs on your Mac.” Since macOS Catalina, apps from outside the App Store are expected to be notarized, meaning Apple checked them for malicious software. The OphyAI Mac app is signed and notarized by Apple, so it opens with the normal first-launch confirmation rather than a block. (Windows is different: the Windows installer is not code-signed yet; see how to use an AI interview copilot on Windows for the SmartScreen steps.)
macOS asks before any app can listen. Microphone access and screen and system audio recording are controlled per app under System Settings, Privacy & Security. On recent macOS versions the audio setting is called Screen & System Audio Recording, and Apple notes you can allow audio only, without screen recording. If you click Don’t Allow by mistake, the app cannot hear the call until you turn access back on there.
Apple Silicon and Intel both work. You do not need a particular chip. Check which Mac you have under Apple menu, About This Mac, before you download, so you pick the right build if the download page offers two.
How Interview Copilot Helps (Step by Step)
Step 1: Download and install
Go to ophyai.com/download, choose the Mac build, and install it as you would any downloaded Mac app. The desktop app page lists what the app does if you want to read first. Sign in with your OphyAI account. Eligible new users get a first Interview Copilot session free, up to 15 minutes, with no card.
Step 2: Open it and pass Gatekeeper
The first time you open any downloaded app, macOS shows a confirmation. Because the app is notarized, choose Open. If your Mac is managed by an employer or school, the “Allow apps downloaded from” setting may be locked; in that case use the web app instead. Never interview on a company laptop whose IT policy forbids extra software.
Step 3: Grant the permissions it asks for
When the app asks for microphone or audio-recording access, allow it. To check later, open Apple menu, System Settings, Privacy & Security, then Microphone and Screen & System Audio Recording, and make sure OphyAI is switched on. Restart the app after changing a permission. The recording indicator in Control Center shows when a microphone is in use, which helps you confirm the setup.
Step 4: Learn the four hotkeys
On a Mac the shortcuts use Cmd:
| Hotkey | What it does |
|---|---|
| Cmd+Shift+Space | Show or hide the answer window |
| Cmd+Shift+A | Ask AI now |
| Cmd+Shift+P | Click-through, so clicks pass to the window underneath |
| Cmd+Shift+H | Panic hide |
Practice them until you can use them without looking down. Click-through matters most on a laptop screen: it lets you leave the answer window over part of the call and still click the meeting controls.
Step 5: Pick a layout
The desktop app offers four layouts: Teleprompter, Panel, Split Desk and Q&A Feed. Teleprompter suits reading a short cue near your camera line. Panel and Split Desk suit a wider screen where you want the suggestion beside the call. Q&A Feed keeps a running list of questions and suggestions, which helps in long technical rounds. Try each during the test call and keep the one that lets you keep eye contact.
Step 6: Run a test call
Start a Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet call with a friend, or play a recorded interview question through your speakers. Confirm three things: the live transcript picks up the other person, a suggestion appears, and a full-screen share from the meeting app does not show the answer window. Then practice answering in your own words. Suggestions are prompts, not scripts; reading them word for word sounds flat and is easy to spot. For a full rehearsal with feedback first, run a mock in OphyAI Interview Practice, which gives a transcript and per-answer feedback.
What It Cannot Do
Be clear about the limits before the real interview.
- It does not hide from a camera or a person. Excluding the window from screen sharing does not hide it from a camera pointed at your screen, a person in the room, or proctoring software that inspects running apps. Locked-down assessment apps may refuse to run alongside it at all. See can Zoom, Teams or Meet see overlay apps during screen share for how capture exclusion works.
- It does not change the employer’s rules. Some employers ban AI help in live interviews; others allow it in some rounds. Read the invitation, ask the recruiter, and check the tracker of companies that allow AI in interviews. Can interviewers detect an AI copilot covers the behavioral tells.
- It does not know your history. It suggests structure and points to make. Your stories, numbers and judgment have to be yours.
- The phone apps are not live copilots. The iPhone app (iOS 15.1 or later) and the Android app are for practice interviews, resumes, cover letters, job search and tracking. Live help runs on the Mac app or the web app; see AI interview helper apps compared.
Set-Up Checklist
Run through this the day before:
- App installed from ophyai.com/download and signed in.
- Microphone and Screen & System Audio Recording turned on for OphyAI in Privacy & Security.
- Meeting app updated (Zoom, Teams or the browser you use for Google Meet).
- Headphones tested: if you wear them, confirm the transcript still hears the interviewer through system audio.
- Hotkeys practiced, especially show or hide and panic hide.
- One layout chosen and positioned near your camera.
- A 10-minute test call done, including a full-screen share.
- The employer’s AI rules checked with the recruiter.
- Credits checked: a Standard or Technical Copilot session uses 15 credits, Advanced uses 25.
On pricing: Pro is $29 a month with 300 credits (about 20 Standard Copilot sessions) and Premium is $59 a month with 500 credits; annual billing is 20% off. There is no $9 OphyAI plan: the Basic plan was retired in July 2026, so older articles quoting a $9 Basic plan, Pro at $19 or Premium at $39 are out of date. Where offered, a $9.99 Interview Pass covers one Standard session up to 2 hours. Frequently Asked Questions
Does the OphyAI desktop app work on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs?
Yes. The OphyAI desktop app runs on both Apple Silicon (M-series) and Intel Macs, and it is signed and notarized by Apple, so Gatekeeper opens it with the normal first-launch confirmation. Check which chip you have under Apple menu, About This Mac, and choose the matching build on ophyai.com/download if two are listed.
Why can’t the copilot hear the interviewer on my Mac?
Usually a macOS permission is off. Open System Settings, Privacy & Security, and check that OphyAI is enabled under Microphone and under Screen & System Audio Recording, then restart the app. The desktop app hears the interviewer through system audio, so you do not need a virtual audio cable, but macOS still has to allow the access.
Will Zoom or Google Meet show the answer window when I share my screen?
No, on the desktop app the live answer window is excluded from screen sharing and screen recording by macOS, so Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams do not show it, even on a full-screen share. That does not hide it from a camera pointed at the screen, a person in the room, or proctoring software that inspects running apps.
Do I need to install anything to use Interview Copilot on a Mac?
No. The web app at app.ophyai.com works in your browser with no install, and live suggestions appear in Whisper Mode, the browser overlay. The desktop app adds a separate answer window, system-audio listening, the four hotkeys and the four layouts. Use the web app on a managed Mac where you cannot install software.
Can I use the iPhone app as a live interview copilot instead?
No. The OphyAI iPhone app (iOS 15.1 or later) is for practice interviews, building and tailoring resumes, drafting cover letters, searching jobs and tracking applications. It is not a live interview copilot. For live help during a call on your Mac, use the Mac desktop app or the web app.
Is it allowed to use an AI copilot in a job interview?
It depends on the employer and the round. Some employers publish rules banning AI help in live interviews, and some allow it in specific stages. Read the interview invitation, ask the recruiter if it is unclear, and check the tracker of companies that allow AI in interviews before you rely on any live tool.
How many interviews can I run on one Pro plan?
Pro costs $29 a month and includes 300 credits. A Standard or Technical Copilot session uses 15 credits and an Advanced session uses 25, so Pro’s credits cover about 20 Standard Copilot sessions. Premium is $59 a month with 500 credits. Annual billing is 20% off: $278 a year for Pro and $566 for Premium.
