Mayo Clinic Interview Process 2026: OnDemand Video, Panels & RN Pay
Mayo Clinic interview process for 2026: the OnDemand recorded interview, panel rounds, 15 questions with frameworks, and posted pay for RN, CNA and IT roles.
Last updated: October 2026
TL;DR
Based on Mayo’s postings and candidate reports, the Mayo Clinic interview process runs in five steps: an online application at jobs.mayoclinic.org, a screen (a recruiter or hiring manager call, or for some roles an OnDemand pre-recorded video interview), one or more behavioral interviews with the hiring manager and often a panel of future teammates, an offer, and a post-offer placement assessment that includes a urine drug screen, immunization review and TB testing. Mayo does not publish a fixed timeline; candidates commonly report about three to four weeks from application to offer, with some much faster or slower. Rehearse the values-based “tell me about a time” questions below in OphyAI Interview Practice, and confirm the rules with your recruiter before using OphyAI Interview Copilot on a live video round.
Quick Answer: Mayo Clinic Interview Process
| Stage | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Online application | A resume that mirrors the posting’s license, certification and experience lines (RN, BLS, ACLS, ARRT, Epic) |
| OnDemand recorded interview (some postings) | Two-minute STAR answers you can deliver to a camera; you may re-record, and Mayo sees only the final take |
| Recruiter or hiring manager screen | Your “why Mayo Clinic,” schedule and shift fit, license status and pay expectations |
| Hiring manager and panel interview | Five or six patient-first stories: a difficult patient or family, an error you caught, a teamwork conflict, a change you led |
| Role extras | Clinical scenarios for nurses, competency talk for allied health, technical or Epic questions for IT and data |
| Offer and placement assessment | Urine drug screen, immunization review and TB testing; RN license and certifications verified |
Action Plan: Prepare for Mayo Clinic by Round
| Round | What Mayo Clinic tests | What to do before the interview |
|---|---|---|
| OnDemand recording | Clear, calm communication with no interviewer to prompt you | Record five practice answers, watch them back, cut filler and keep each near two minutes |
| Recruiter or manager screen | Motivation, shift and location fit, credentials | Know the posted pay range, which campus you want, and your exact license and certification dates |
| Behavioral interview | Whether your actions match “the needs of the patient come first” | Map one story to each value in RICH TIES (Respect, Integrity, Compassion, Healing, Teamwork, Innovation, Excellence, Stewardship) |
| Panel with teammates | How you would fit a multidisciplinary team | Prepare two questions for the panel about how the unit works together |
| Clinical or technical extras | Safe practice, competency, systems skill | Rehearse priority-setting scenarios (nurses) or walk through a project you built (IT and data) |
With only one week, spend three days writing values-mapped STAR stories, two days saying them out loud on camera, and two days on your role’s clinical or technical scenarios.
What Makes Mayo Clinic Different
Mayo Clinic is a not-for-profit academic medical center founded in Rochester, Minnesota by Dr. William James Mayo and Dr. Charles Horace Mayo. Its careers site calls it “the largest integrated, not for-profit medical group practice in the world,” with major campuses in Rochester, Jacksonville, Florida and Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona, plus Mayo Clinic Health System sites across Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. Mayo says more than 1 million patients from all 50 states and nearly 150 countries come for care each year. Local coverage of its 2025 annual report put operating revenue at about $21.5 billion and the worldwide workforce at “nearly 85,000” after adding more than 12,400 employees in the year.
One careers site hires nurses, assistants, therapists, lab scientists, pharmacists, researchers and Epic analysts. Traits that shape what interviewers listen for:
- The primary value is literal. Mayo’s careers site says its primary value, “The needs of the patient come first,” guides its plans and decisions. Interviewers expect your stories to show it, not just repeat it.
- Eight named values. Mayo’s history site says the values are remembered as RICH TIES: Respect, Integrity, Compassion, Healing, Teamwork, Innovation, Excellence and Stewardship. (You may see “RICH TIDES” online; Mayo’s own page uses RICH TIES.) Stewardship, meaning careful use of resources, surprises many candidates.
- Team medicine. Mayo describes “a culture of teamwork, professionalism and mutual respect.” Candidates often report panels with future peers, so how you talk about colleagues matters as much as what you did.
- Magnet nursing. Mayo’s Rochester, Jacksonville, Phoenix and Northwest Wisconsin locations hold ANCC Magnet designation, so be ready to discuss evidence-based practice and how you have contributed to your unit.
For live phone or video rounds, some candidates use OphyAI Interview Copilot to keep answers structured. We found no Mayo Clinic candidate policy on AI tools on its careers site or in the postings we read, so ask your recruiter first and see our tracker of companies that allow AI in interviews.
Interview Process Overview
Mayo’s careers site does not publish a step-by-step hiring page for US roles. What it does say: offers come only after you have “submitted an application for the job through our website jobs.mayoclinic.org and an interview process has occurred”; some postings include an OnDemand pre-recorded interview; and many postings say offers are “contingent upon successful completion of a post offer placement assessment including a urine drug screen, immunization review and tuberculin (TB) skin testing, if applicable.” The middle rounds below are candidate-reported.
| Stage | Format | Duration | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online application | jobs.mayoclinic.org | Not published | Day 1 |
| OnDemand recorded interview (some postings) | Pre-recorded video, questions on screen, re-records allowed | Not published | Days after applying |
| Screen | Phone or video with a recruiter or hiring manager | Not published | 1-2 weeks (candidate-reported) |
| Hiring manager and panel | Video or in person; one-on-one plus panel with team members (candidate-reported) | Not published | 1-3 weeks (candidate-reported) |
| Offer and placement assessment | Offer, then drug screen, immunization review and TB test | - | About 3-4 weeks overall (candidate-reported) |
Application. Apply through jobs.mayoclinic.org and mirror the posting’s license and certification lines. Tailor each version with OphyAI Resume Builder before you submit.
Screen. A recruiter or hiring manager confirms motivation, shift, campus and credentials. A 15-minute voice mock in OphyAI Interview Practice gets your introduction and “why Mayo” under a minute each.
Hiring manager and panel. Candidates describe mostly behavioral questions, often from future teammates. Drill follow-ups on each STAR story in OphyAI Interview Practice.
Offer and placement assessment. Expect the drug screen, immunization review and TB testing before your start date, plus license verification. Log each requisition, interview date and contact in the free OphyAI Application Tracker.
Beware of fake recruiters. Mayo warns that scammers impersonate its recruiters. Its recruitment fraud page says Mayo will never ask for personal information through email or social media chats, never ask you to buy equipment or gift cards, never send or request money as a condition of employment, and that recruiter emails “will ALWAYS end with ‘@mayo.edu.’”
The OnDemand Recorded Interview
Some Mayo postings, including a Rochester Associate Clinical Research Coordinator role and a Lead IT Application Analyst role we read in October 2026, include this paragraph: “During the selection process you may participate in an OnDemand (pre-recorded) interview that you can complete at your convenience. During the OnDemand interview, a question will appear on your screen, and you will have time to consider each question before responding. You will have the opportunity to re-record your answer to each question,” and “Mayo Clinic will only see the final recording. The complete interview will be reviewed by a Mayo Clinic staff member, and you will be notified of next steps.” Some Glassdoor reviewers describe a HireVue-style one-way video (candidate-reported).
What it tests: whether you answer clearly and warmly with no interviewer nodding along. Red flags: reading from notes, answers with no result, generic “I love helping people” lines, and poor lighting or audio. How to prepare: draft four STAR stories, then record each one with a timer. Run one recorded session in OphyAI Interview Practice and read the transcript for filler words. Use your re-records on purpose: the first take is for nerves, the second is the one to keep. Our HireVue interview preparation guide covers one-way video in more depth. Complete the real recording on your own unless its instructions say otherwise.
Role-Specific Breakdowns
Registered Nurses (RN)
Rochester RN postings we read in October 2026 list pay of $43.84-$66.84 an hour for Medical and Float Staff units, $39.64-$62.64 for GI Endoscopy, and $35.84-$58.84 for Palliative Care. Jacksonville and Phoenix RN postings did not show a range; they describe “an innovative nursing compensation model that rewards experience, education, and dedication to the organization.” Requirements to know before the interview: an RN license and BLS (an Emergency Department posting in Jacksonville also requires ACLS, plus PALS within six months), one year of RN experience for many units, and a rule that associate degree RNs starting after April 1, 2020 must complete a BSN within five years. New graduates are told to apply through the Nurse Residency Program posting instead; that program covers nurses with less than 12 months of experience.
What they test: prioritization, patient safety, escalation, and how you work inside a Magnet, multidisciplinary team. Red flags: no clear escalation path in a deteriorating-patient story, blaming a colleague, or no example of patient teaching. How to prepare: rehearse three clinical scenarios out loud (a rapid response, a medication error caught, a frightened family) in an OphyAI Interview Practice behavioral session. Our registered nurse interview questions cover the clinical basics.
Nursing Assistants and Patient Care Assistants (CNA, PCA)
A Nursing Assistant (CNA) posting on a psychiatric unit in Albert Lea, Minnesota pays $20.00-$23.38 an hour “based upon union contract,” with rotating 8-hour shifts and every other weekend. A full-time Patient Care Assistant posting in Eau Claire, Wisconsin pays $20.00-$27.33 an hour; it says BLS can be completed during orientation if you do not have it, and that shift options are “discussed during interview.”
What they test: reliability, safe transfers and vitals, dignity in personal care, and knowing when to tell the RN. Red flags: doing a task outside your scope, a vague answer about attendance, or impatience in a difficult-patient story. How to prepare: use our CNA interview questions and say a “patient refuses care” answer aloud in an OphyAI Interview Practice voice mock until it fits in 90 seconds.
Allied Health (Respiratory, Imaging, Lab, Pharmacy)
October 2026 examples: a Respiratory Therapist in Austin, Minnesota at $37.63-$56.40 an hour plus shift differential, with a $10,000 sign-on bonus and an RRT plus Minnesota license required before day one; a Radiologic Technologist in Eau Claire at $32.43-$48.66 with up to a $5,000 sign-on bonus for full-time roles and ARRT certification; a Medical Technologist ($32.43-$48.66) or Medical Lab Technician ($25.87-$38.05) in Eau Claire with “a two-year commitment”; and a Cancer Care Pharmacist in Jacksonville at $121,846-$182,686 a year.
What they test: competency on your equipment or method, safety habits, and clear handoffs to physicians and nurses. Red flags: you cannot explain how you verify a result or a patient ID, or you treat a protocol as optional. How to prepare: walk through one procedure you know well step by step, including the safety checks, then rehearse it in OphyAI Interview Practice. Our healthcare interview questions list cross-role questions.
Corporate, IT and Data
Many of Mayo’s Epic and data postings are based in Rochester, often hybrid within 100 miles of a campus or fully remote. Posted ranges in October 2026: Application Analyst II, Revenue Cycle $88,358-$123,780 (Epic certification or automation certification required); Lead IT Application Analyst $112,819.20-$157,955.20; Information Security Engineer $102,336-$143,270; Data Engineer (remote) $102,300-$143,200; Principal Data Engineer (remote) $148,100-$214,700; and a one-year Associate Data Science Analyst in Jacksonville at $78,270.40-$117,312.00. Several of these postings say Mayo will not sponsor or transfer visas and does not participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension.
What they test: clinical workflow understanding, Epic build and testing, data quality, and stakeholder communication with clinicians. Red flags: describing a build with no end-user in mind, or ignoring patient privacy in a data design. How to prepare: prepare one project walkthrough and one SQL or data-quality problem with OphyAI Coding Interview, then re-solve it alone. Our SQL interview questions help for data roles.
Research
Research roles span technologists, coordinators and scientists. A Research Technologist in a Jacksonville biorepository lab pays $27.99-$41.98 an hour with on-call rotations; an Associate Clinical Research Coordinator in Rochester’s cancer center pays $24.55-$35.65 an hour and uses the OnDemand interview.
What they test: protocol adherence, documentation and consent. Red flags: casual answers about deviations or data integrity. How to prepare: rehearse a deviation story in OphyAI Interview Practice and read our clinical research interview guide.
Common Questions with Frameworks
These questions come from Mayo’s stated values, posting requirements and candidate reports on Glassdoor. Build every answer with the STAR method and end each one with a result.
1. “Tell me about yourself.” (Opener)
Approach: current role, one strength the posting asks for (critical thinking, accuracy, teamwork), and why this Mayo unit is your next step. Keep it under a minute. See our tell me about yourself guide.
2. “Why do you want to work at Mayo Clinic?” (Motivation)
Approach: name something specific: the integrated practice, education and research model, a specialty the campus is known for, Magnet nursing, or the residency program. Tie it to a personal reason. “Prestige” alone is a red flag. More in our why do you want to work here guide.
3. “What does ‘the needs of the patient come first’ mean to you? Give an example.” (Values)
Approach: this is Mayo’s primary value, so expect it in some form. Tell one story where you put a patient’s need ahead of convenience or routine, and show you stayed within policy while doing it.
4. “Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult patient or family member.” (Behavioral)
Approach: the emotion, what you heard underneath it, what you did within scope, and the outcome. Candidates report this one often for nursing and patient-facing roles.
5. “Describe a conflict with a coworker and how you resolved it.” (Teamwork)
Approach: the disagreement, how you listened, the shared patient goal you found, and the result. Never blame. Mayo’s team-medicine culture makes this one weigh heavily.
6. “Tell me about a mistake you made and what you did next.” (Integrity)
Approach: own it quickly, describe how you reported it, what you fixed, and what you changed so it would not repeat. Hiding or minimizing the error is the red flag.
7. “Your patient’s condition changes suddenly. Walk me through what you do.” (Clinical, RN)
Approach: assess (ABCs, vitals), act within protocol, call the rapid response team or provider using SBAR, document, and update the family. Interviewers want a clear escalation path.
8. “How do you prioritize when you have four patients needing you at once?” (Clinical prioritization)
Approach: airway and safety first, then time-critical medications and unstable patients, then delegation to a PCA or CNA for appropriate tasks. Explain how you communicate delays.
9. “A patient refuses a bath or a turn. What do you do?” (CNA, PCA)
Approach: respect the refusal, ask why, offer a choice of time, try again, and report to the RN and document. Show dignity and scope awareness together.
10. “Tell me about a time you caught an error before it reached a patient.” (Safety)
Approach: what you noticed, the check you used (two identifiers, a second verification), who you told, and the system change after. Works for nurses, techs, lab and pharmacy.
11. “How do you explain a procedure to a nervous patient?” (Patient education)
Approach: plain words, one step at a time, teach-back (“tell me in your own words”), and invite questions. Allied health panels often ask this.
12. “Describe a time you improved a process or tried something new.” (Innovation)
Approach: the problem, the change you proposed, how you got colleagues on board, and a measurable result. Innovation is one of Mayo’s eight values.
13. “Tell me about a time you saved time or resources without hurting quality.” (Stewardship)
Approach: the waste you spotted, what you changed, and the result, with a number if you have one. Few candidates prepare for this value.
14. “Walk me through an Epic build or workflow change you supported.” (IT)
Approach: the clinical request, how you gathered requirements from end users, build and test steps, go-live support, and what you would do differently. Name your certification.
15. “Where do you see yourself in five years?” (Growth)
Approach: tie your goal to Mayo’s education side: a specialty certification, a BSN or advanced degree, or a lead role. Mayo’s RN postings mention tuition reimbursement, so growth goals fit.
Culture Fit: Living “The Needs of the Patient Come First”
Patient first, inside the rules. The best answers show you advocating for a patient while following protocol, not breaking it.
Respect across the team. Panels often include the peers you would work beside. Speak about past colleagues the way you would want them to speak about you.
Teamwork over heroics. Mayo describes its care as integrated across practice, education and research, delivered by multidisciplinary teams. Stories where you pulled in the right person beat stories where you did everything alone.
What interviewers screen for: compassion with specific examples, honesty about mistakes, clear escalation, respect for colleagues, and curiosity about learning.

Ranges come from live Mayo Clinic postings checked in October 2026; many say “education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.” For context, the $43.84-$66.84 Rochester RN range works out to roughly $91,000-$139,000 a year at 2,080 hours, against a US median of $97,550 for registered nurses (BLS, May 2025). As a not-for-profit, Mayo offers no stock. Its benefits page instead highlights a pension “at no cost to employees,” a 403(b)/401(k) match of 50%-100% depending on accrued participation, up to $10,000 per child in adoption assistance and up to $12,000 in dependent scholarships. Before you name a number, read our salary negotiation guide.
Preparation Timeline: 4-6 Weeks
| Week | Focus | Activities |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Research and targeting | Read the full posting, the campus page and Mayo’s values. Note pay, shift, license and certification requirements. Pick the campus and unit you want and why. |
| 2 | Stories | Write eight STAR stories, one per RICH TIES value, each with a patient or customer and a result. Mark which two cover a mistake and a conflict. |
| 3 | Recorded practice | Record five answers on camera with a two-minute limit, review, and re-record. Practice in OphyAI Interview Practice and read the transcript. |
| 4 | Role skills | RNs: rapid response, prioritization and teaching scenarios. CNAs: refusals and safety. Allied health: procedure walkthroughs. IT and data: one Epic or data project plus one SQL problem. |
| 5-6 | Panel rehearsal | Full mock interviews with follow-ups, three questions for the panel, license copies, references and an answer on your pay expectations. |
Common Mistakes
Quoting the primary value without a story. Saying “the needs of the patient come first” earns nothing on its own. Interviewers want the moment you lived it.
Applying to the wrong posting as a new graduate. Mayo’s RN postings send new graduates to the Nurse Residency Program posting. Applying to an experienced-RN role that requires one year of experience can cost you time.
Rushing the OnDemand recording. You can re-record each answer and Mayo sees only the final take. Candidates who submit their first nervous attempt give that advantage away.
Talking down past teammates. Panels include future peers. Blame in a conflict story is a strong red flag in a team-medicine culture.
Prepare for Mayo Clinic with OphyAI
Mayo rewards specific, values-based stories told calmly, first to a camera and then to a panel. Both improve with rehearsal.
Use OphyAI Interview Practice for voice or text mock interviews with follow-up questions, a transcript and per-answer feedback in behavioral, technical and case formats; the free plan covers one session of up to 15 minutes. IT and data candidates can rehearse technical rounds with OphyAI Coding Interview. For live phone or video rounds, OphyAI Interview Copilot gives real-time answer suggestions on Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet, with the first session free for eligible new users (up to 15 minutes, no card). It runs on the web and in Mac and Windows desktop apps; the desktop app’s answer window is excluded from screen sharing, but that does not hide it from a camera, a person in the room or proctoring software, so confirm Mayo’s rules with your recruiter first. Frequently Asked Questions
What questions are asked in a Mayo Clinic interview?
Mostly behavioral “tell me about a time” questions tied to Mayo’s values: a difficult patient or family, a conflict with a coworker, a mistake you made, and what “the needs of the patient come first” means to you. Nurses add clinical scenarios such as a deteriorating patient; IT and data roles add Epic, SQL or project questions. Prepare one story per value.
What is the Mayo Clinic OnDemand interview?
It is a pre-recorded video interview named in some Mayo postings. A question appears on screen, you get time to think, and you record your answer. You can re-record each answer and Mayo sees only the final recording. A Mayo staff member reviews the full interview and then tells you the next step. Treat it like a real interview with a camera.
How long does the Mayo Clinic hiring process take?
Mayo does not publish a fixed timeline. Candidates on Glassdoor commonly describe about three to four weeks from application to offer, with some processes finishing within days and others stretching to two months, depending on the role, campus and panel scheduling. After the offer, allow extra time for the drug screen, immunization review and TB testing before your start date.
Does Mayo Clinic drug test new hires?
Yes, for many roles. Mayo postings we read say job offers are contingent on a post offer placement assessment that includes a urine drug screen, immunization review and tuberculin (TB) skin testing where applicable. Licensed roles also have their license and certifications verified. Ask your recruiter which steps apply to your position and when to schedule them.
How much do Mayo Clinic nurses make in 2026?
October 2026 Rochester postings showed $43.84-$66.84 an hour for Medical and Float Staff RNs, $39.64-$62.64 for GI Endoscopy and $35.84-$58.84 for Palliative Care. Jacksonville and Phoenix RN postings did not list a range. Mayo says its nursing compensation model rewards experience, education and dedication to the organization, so where you land depends on those factors.
Can I use AI tools during a Mayo Clinic interview?
We found no Mayo Clinic candidate policy on AI tools in interviews on its careers site or in the postings we read, so ask your recruiter before using one in a live round, and do not use outside help on the OnDemand recording unless its instructions allow it. Our tracker of companies that allow AI in interviews explains how to ask.
