Humana Interview Process 2026: HireVue Prescreen, 4 Stages & Pay
Humana interview process for 2026: the HireVue text, voice or video prescreen, recruiter and panel rounds, 14 questions, posted pay ranges and CenterWell roles.
Last updated: October 2026
TL;DR
The Humana interview process runs four stages on Humana’s own hiring page: apply online, a recruiter’s initial interview (often preceded by a HireVue text, voice or video prescreen named in the job posting), interviews with the hiring manager and team members by phone, video or in person, then a verbal and written offer that depends on a background check and drug screen. Humana’s postings say the process “may take several weeks or less”; Glassdoor candidates report an average of about 25 days (self-reported). Rehearse the member-focused and behavioral questions below in OphyAI Interview Practice, and confirm the rules with your recruiter before using OphyAI Interview Copilot on a live phone or video round.
Quick Answer: Humana Interview Process
| Stage | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Online application | One tailored resume uploaded at submission (Humana says you cannot change an application afterward) |
| HireVue or Modern Hire prescreen (many postings) | Yes/no knockout answers by text, then a 5-30 minute text, voice or video screen with set questions |
| Recruiter initial interview | A 60-second introduction, a “why Humana” tied to Medicare, CenterWell or the team, and your schedule and license status |
| Hiring manager and team interviews | Four to six STAR stories: a difficult member or patient, an error you caught, a metric you moved, a conflict |
| Role extras | Clinical demonstration for some CenterWell clinic roles, coding and architecture for tech, a license plan for sales |
| Offer and screening | Verbal then written offer; background check and pre-employment drug screen |
Action Plan: Prepare for Humana by Round
| Round | What Humana tests | What to do before the interview |
|---|---|---|
| Text and recorded prescreen | Basic fit, communication, and whether you meet the knockout requirements | Answer the yes/no questions honestly and write short, complete text answers in full sentences |
| Recruiter screen | Motivation, pay and schedule fit, remote-work setup | Know the posted range, your internet speed and your license state before the call |
| Hiring manager interview | Judgment with members and patients, accuracy, metrics | Bring one story with a number in it for every requirement in the posting |
| Panel or team round | Collaboration and how you handle pressure | Practice answering two interviewers at once in under two minutes per answer |
| Technical or clinical extras | Coding, architecture, clinical skills, compliance | Rehearse the role-specific task (code, criteria-based review, intake demonstration) out loud |
With one week, spend half of it on the recorded prescreen (it is where many candidates stop hearing back) and half on four STAR stories you can tell in two minutes each.
What Makes Humana Different
Humana is a Louisville, Kentucky health company built mainly around Medicare. Its FY2025 10-K reports about 15 million members in its medical benefit plans and about 4.7 million in specialty products, with 83% of 2025 premiums and services revenue coming from federal government contracts. It also runs CenterWell, its care-delivery business: the 10-K says CenterWell’s primary care arm operates 350 clinics with about 1,300 primary care providers, alongside home health and pharmacy. Humana reported about 67,060 associates at the end of 2025, an average tenure of 7 years and a 13.8% voluntary turnover rate.
That mix means one company hires software engineers, utilization management nurses, home health nurses, medical assistants, telesales agents and actuaries through one careers site. Traits that shape what interviewers listen for:
- Seniors and federal rules come first. Most members are on Medicare, so interviewers favor candidates who explain things patiently and follow compliance rules without being reminded.
- Remote work is common, with conditions. In a sample of 228 live Humana postings we pulled in October 2026, 136 listed a remote location. Remote postings require at least 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload and “a dedicated space lacking ongoing interruptions to protect member PHI / HIPAA information.”
- Metrics-driven clinical work. Nursing and care roles mention Medicare Advantage Stars quality scores, review turnaround times and avoidable ER visits. Expect questions on how you hit targets without cutting corners.
- Caring language is part of the brand. Every posting opens with “Become a part of our caring community,” and Humana’s careers site says “At Humana, caring is everything.” A believable care story beats a generic one.
For live phone or video rounds, some candidates use OphyAI Interview Copilot to keep answers structured. Humana has not published a candidate policy on AI tools that we could find, so ask your recruiter first and see our tracker of companies that allow AI in interviews.
Interview Process Overview
Humana’s “How we hire” page lists four steps: explore, apply, interview and offer. It says that “a recruiter will reach out for an initial interview and guide you through subsequent stages with the hiring manager and team members,” that interviews “may include phone calls, video interviews, and in-person discussions,” and that “for some clinical roles, you may need to complete an online assessment or visit a specific location.” Durations below come from Humana job postings where stated; the timing column is candidate-reported.
| Stage | Format | Duration | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online application | Workday application on careers.humana.com | Not published | Day 1, confirmation email |
| Prescreen (many postings) | HireVue or Modern Hire: yes/no text questions, then a text, pre-recorded voice or on-demand video screen | 5-10 min (text), 10-15 min (voice or on-demand), 15-30 min (recorded screen), per postings | Shortly after applying |
| Recruiter initial interview | Phone or video | Not published | Days to 2 weeks (candidate-reported) |
| Hiring manager and team interviews | Phone, video or in person; panels common | Not published | 1-3 weeks (candidate-reported) |
| Offer | Verbal, then written; background check and drug screen | - | About 25 days overall on Glassdoor (candidate-reported) |
Application. Humana only accepts applications through its career site, not emailed resumes, and says you cannot alter an application once submitted. Tailor your resume to the posting’s required qualifications with OphyAI Resume Builder before you click apply, not after.
Prescreen. This is Humana’s most distinctive step and gets its own section below. Warm up for it with a short text-mode session in OphyAI Interview Practice so your written answers come out complete and calm.
Recruiter interview. The recruiter checks motivation, pay expectations, schedule, license status and, for remote jobs, your work-at-home setup. Run a 15-minute voice mock in OphyAI Interview Practice so your introduction and “why Humana” each land in about a minute.
Hiring manager and team interviews. Humana’s own advice is to “be prepared to discuss your work experience and skills related to the position” and to ask questions about the role. Candidates describe mostly behavioral “tell me about a time” questions, often from a panel. Drill two-minute STAR answers with follow-up questions in OphyAI Interview Practice, the closest match to a panel probing your story.
Offer. The recruiter makes a verbal offer, then a written one, dependent on a background check and pre-employment drug screening. Florida-based clinical roles add Level 2 screening through the state clearinghouse. Track every requisition and its stage in the free OphyAI Application Tracker.
The HireVue Prescreen
Many Humana postings carry an “Interview Format” section naming HireVue (some older ones say Modern Hire, which HireVue acquired). In our October 2026 sample, 18 of 228 postings included one, spread across nursing, coding, compliance, data engineering, pharmacy and physician roles. The wording varies, so read your posting closely. Versions we found:
- Text and yes/no prescreen. “Shortly after submitting your application, you may receive both a text message and email requesting you complete prescreen questions with either yes or no answers. The text message may arrive prior to the email.”
- Pre-recorded voice or SMS interview. A medical coder posting describes “a pre-recorded Voice Interview and/or an SMS Text Messaging interview”: about 10-15 minutes by phone for voice, 5-10 minutes for text.
- On-demand assessment. Medical director postings describe “an on-demand assessment with pre-determined questions” of about 10-15 minutes.
- Recorded screen. A field RN posting says to expect “about 15 to 30 minutes” and to check spam folders for the invitation.
What it tests: whether you meet the hard requirements, and whether you can explain your experience clearly with no interviewer to prompt you. Red flags: one-line text answers, answering “yes” to a license or schedule requirement you do not meet, rambling voice answers with no example, and missing the invitation in your spam folder. How to prepare: draft four short STAR examples in writing first, then say them out loud with a timer. Do one recorded rehearsal in OphyAI Interview Practice and review the transcript for filler. Our HireVue interview preparation guide covers the one-way format in depth. Take the real prescreen on your own unless its instructions say otherwise.
Role-Specific Breakdowns
Corporate Technology, Data and AI
Humana’s engineering postings center on Louisville, Dallas and Nashville, with many remote. A Software Engineer 2 posting (pharmacy benefit platform) asks for 3+ years of experience, .NET, PySpark, Databricks and Azure, and pays $80,900-$110,300 with bonus eligibility; it says the role uses “AI tools such as Claude code or GitHub Copilot” on the job. A Senior Software Engineer (mainframe COBOL, CICS, DB2) pays $106,900-$147,000, a Senior Data Engineer $117,600-$161,700, and a Lead Data Scientist working on AI agents $142,300-$195,700. Glassdoor candidates describe a recruiter call, a LeetCode-style coding round, then an architecture round with an architect and director; others mention OOP basics and REST versus GraphQL questions (candidate-reported).
What they test: clean code, system design for regulated health data, and explaining your own projects. Red flags: you cannot defend a design decision on your resume, or you ignore HIPAA when designing anything that touches member data. How to prepare: rehearse one medium coding problem and one healthcare data pipeline design with OphyAI Coding Interview, then re-solve alone. See our system design interview guide.
Nurses and Care Managers (Humana Insurance)
Insurance-side nursing is mostly remote and criteria-driven. A Utilization Management RN posting requires a compact RN license and over a year of hospital, SNF, home health or acute experience, prefers knowledge of “Milliman Care Guidelines or Interqual,” and pays $71,100-$97,800. A Manager, Care Management (Stars) posting requires 5+ years of RN experience and 3+ in case management, and pays $86,300-$118,700. A field-based RN Care Coordinator in Indiana pays $71,100-$97,800 and uses a recorded Modern Hire screen.
What they test: applying medical-necessity criteria consistently, documentation, productivity, and calm calls with providers. Red flags: no example of working against a metric, or treating a denial as a personal judgment rather than a criteria decision. How to prepare: bring a story about a complex discharge and one about meeting a review target, then practice them in an OphyAI Interview Practice behavioral session. Our registered nurse interview questions cover the clinical basics.
CenterWell Clinical Roles (Primary Care, Home Health, Pharmacy)
CenterWell is where Humana hires in-person clinicians. A CenterWell Home Health RN posting in Lincoln, Nebraska pays $69,500-$95,600 with a $10,000 sign-on bonus and requires med-surg, ICU, ER or acute experience, CPR and a car. A clinic-based Clinical Care Nurse in Kansas City pays $71,100-$97,800 and asks for motivational interviewing skills. A Medical Assistant posting ($43,000-$56,200) is the clearest look at how CenterWell interviews: “During the application and interview process, we will ask you to demonstrate these,” with abilities “assessed in demonstration” and through a “structured interview process.”
What they test: safe, consistent clinical tasks, patient teaching (the MA posting names the “loop-back” teach-back method), HIPAA and infection control. Red flags: skipping a safety step when demonstrating, vague answers on documentation. How to prepare: rehearse a rooming or intake routine out loud and practice explaining a care plan to an older patient in a voice session of OphyAI Interview Practice.
Customer Service, Care Coordination and Operations
Humana’s 10-K reports about 2,200 telemarketing representatives, and many service roles sit in care coordination and utilization management support. October 2026 examples: UM Administration Coordinator $40,000-$52,300; Clinical Programs Pharmacy Technician $40,000-$52,300 (remote, license or national certification required, camera on through 2+ weeks of training); Care Coordinator (Illinois) $53,700-$72,600. We found no live frontline member call center representative posting when we checked, so watch for seasonal openings. Glassdoor candidates describe a recorded phone screen with automated questions, then a panel asking about a difficult customer, juggling several systems at once and building rapport quickly (candidate-reported).
What they test: empathy with seniors, accuracy while multitasking, and schedule reliability. Red flags: impatience in your upset-caller story, availability that does not match the posted hours. How to prepare: use our customer service representative interview questions and practice an upset-caller answer in OphyAI Interview Practice until it fits in 90 seconds.
Sales and Licensed Agents
Humana’s 10-K reports about 1,000 sales representatives. Outbound Tele Sales Agent postings (remote Texas and Mississippi) pay $45,000-$60,900 plus a bonus plan and focus on scheduling virtual appointments. A bilingual CenterWell Field Sales Professional in Dallas pays $45,400-$61,300 and needs 3+ years of sales or a degree. A Senior Manager, Medicare Sales in Jackson, Mississippi requires an active health insurance license and 50% travel, with a posted range of $69,300-$204,600.
What they test: consultative selling to seniors, compliance with Medicare marketing rules, and self-generated activity. Red flags: pressure-selling language, no numbers on past quota. How to prepare: bring your quota attainment and licensing status, and run a mock sales conversation in OphyAI Interview Practice. See our sales representative interview questions.
Common Questions with Frameworks
These come from Humana’s own interview advice, posting requirements and candidate reports. Build every story with the STAR method.
1. “Tell me about yourself.” (Opener)
Approach: present role, one strength tied to the posting (accuracy, empathy, delivery), and why this Humana team is next. Keep it under a minute. Templates are in our tell me about yourself guide.
2. “Why Humana?” (Motivation)
Approach: name something specific: the Medicare focus, CenterWell’s senior primary care model, or the team’s product. Tie it to a personal reason. “Great benefits” alone is a red flag.
3. “Tell me about a time you handled a difficult customer or member.” (Behavioral)
Approach: describe the emotion, what you heard behind it, the fix within the rules, and the outcome. Candidates report this one most often for service roles.
4. “Describe a time you had to juggle multiple systems or tasks at once.” (Behavioral)
Approach: name the systems and the volume, how you prioritized, and how you kept accuracy. End with a number (calls handled, reviews closed).
5. “How do you protect member privacy when working from home?” (Compliance)
Approach: dedicated space, locked screen, no shared devices, HIPAA minimum-necessary rule. Humana’s postings require a space that protects PHI, so a vague answer stands out.
6. “Walk me through how you decide whether a request meets medical necessity.” (Clinical, UM)
Approach: criteria first (InterQual or MCG), clinical documentation, when to request more information, when to escalate to a medical director. Show consistency, not opinion.
7. “Tell me about a time you caught an error before it reached a patient.” (Safety)
Approach: what you noticed, the check you used, who you told, and what changed afterward. This fits nurses, pharmacy technicians and medical assistants.
8. “How would you explain a new medication plan to an 80-year-old patient?” (Patient education)
Approach: plain words, one change at a time, teach-back (“tell me in your own words”), and involving a caregiver. CenterWell’s MA posting names this loop-back method directly.
9. “Tell me about a time you met a productivity or quality target.” (Metrics)
Approach: the target, your baseline, what you changed, and the result. Clinical roles reference review turnaround and Stars measures, so numbers matter.
10. “Describe a project you are proud of and the design decisions behind it.” (Technical)
Approach: problem, constraints, two options you rejected and why, outcome. Expect follow-ups two layers deep.
11. “Design a system that processes pharmacy eligibility checks at scale.” (System design)
Approach: clarify volume and latency, propose event-driven intake, a rules service, a cache for member eligibility, audit logging and PHI encryption. Discuss retries and idempotency.
12. “What is the difference between REST and GraphQL?” (Technical)
Approach: candidate-reported. Define both, give a use case for each, and note the tradeoffs: over-fetching, caching and schema evolution.
13. “How do you build trust with a senior who is skeptical of a new plan?” (Sales)
Approach: listen first, explain options without pressure, respect a no, follow Medicare marketing rules. Interviewers watch for pushy language.
14. “Tell me about a disagreement with a coworker and how you resolved it.” (Teamwork)
Approach: the disagreement, how you listened, the shared goal you found, and the result. Avoid blaming. More options in our common behavioral interview questions.
Culture Fit: Caring, Compliance and Remote Discipline
Humana interviewers screen for people who can be warm and rule-bound at the same time.
Caring that shows up in examples. Humana’s careers site leads with “caring is everything.” Interviewers want a specific moment where you went further for a patient, member or colleague, not a claim that you are caring.
Comfort with regulation. With most revenue from federal contracts, rules on privacy, Medicare marketing and documentation shape daily work. Show you follow procedure even when it is slower.
Remote self-management. Many roles are work-at-home with productivity targets and camera-on training. Describe your routine, your setup and how you stay reachable.
What interviewers screen for: empathy with older adults, accuracy, steady performance against metrics, and honesty about what you do not know.
Compensation Overview (2026 Estimates, USD)
| Role | Base Salary | Total Compensation (Base + Bonus + Equity) |

| Senior Software Engineer | $106,900 - $147,000 (posted) | Base plus bonus plan |
| Lead Data Scientist | $142,300 - $195,700 (posted) | Base plus bonus plan |
| Utilization Management RN | $71,100 - $97,800 (posted) | Base plus bonus plan |
| Manager, Care Management | $86,300 - $118,700 (posted) | Base plus bonus plan |

| Outbound Tele Sales Agent | $45,000 - $60,900 (posted) | Base plus bonus plan |
Ranges are from live Humana postings in October 2026. Humana calls each one “a good faith estimate of starting base pay” that “may be higher or lower based on geographic location,” so offers vary by state and experience. Postings say roles are “eligible for a bonus incentive plan” but do not publish amounts. Levels.fyi lists 114 Humana software engineer submissions, from about $98.2K for Software Engineer 1 to $248K for Principal (candidate-reported). Humana’s benefits page lists a 401(k) match, tuition assistance and health coverage; its hiring page says health insurance starts on your first day. See our salary negotiation guide.
Preparation Timeline: 4-6 Weeks
| Week | Focus | Activities |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Research and targeting | Read Humana’s How we hire page and the full posting, including any Interview Format section. Note pay, schedule, license and remote requirements. Learn the Medicare basics for your area. |
| 2 | Stories | Write six STAR stories: difficult member or patient, error caught, metric moved, conflict, multitasking, learning a new system. Add a number to each. |
| 3 | Prescreen practice | Answer five questions in writing in under 150 words each, then record five voice answers with a timer. Review in OphyAI Interview Practice. |
| 4 | Role skills | Tech: two coding problems and one health-data design. Nursing: criteria-based review cases. Sales: a mock needs-based conversation. Service: an upset-caller drill. |
| 5-6 | Panel rehearsal | Full mock interviews with follow-up questions, five questions to ask the hiring manager, and logistics (setup, license copies, references). |
Common Mistakes
Ignoring the text message. Humana’s prescreen invitations can arrive by text before email. Candidates who miss them or reply days later often never reach a recruiter.
Answering yes to requirements you do not meet. Knockout questions check license state, schedule and experience. A wrong yes surfaces later and ends the process.
Generic caring. “I love helping people” without a specific story reads as rehearsed. Give one real patient or member moment.
Skipping the remote setup. Remote postings list internet speeds and a private space for PHI. Have your answer ready.
Forgetting compliance in technical and sales answers. A design with no PHI protection or a sales pitch with pressure language fails at a Medicare company.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Humana HireVue interview?
It is a prescreen Humana runs through HireVue (formerly Modern Hire) for many roles. Depending on the posting, you answer yes/no questions by text, then complete an SMS text interview (about 5-10 minutes), a pre-recorded voice interview by phone (about 10-15 minutes) or an on-demand video assessment with set questions. A recruiter reviews it before inviting you to the next round.
How long does the Humana hiring process take?
Humana does not publish a fixed timeline. Its postings say the process “may take several weeks or less” depending on openings, applicant numbers and interviewer schedules. Glassdoor candidates report an average of about 25 days from application to offer, with service roles often faster and senior corporate roles slower. Check status anytime in your candidate home account.
Does Humana drug test new hires?
Yes. Humana’s How we hire page says a job offer “is dependent on the successful completion of a background check and pre-employment drug screening.” Florida-based clinical roles also require Level 2 background screening through the state’s Care Provider Background Screening Clearinghouse. Expect these steps after the verbal offer and before your start date.
Are most Humana jobs remote?
Many are. In a sample of 228 live postings we pulled in October 2026, 136 listed a remote location, mostly in corporate, nursing review and support roles. CenterWell clinic, home health and field sales roles are in person. Remote postings require at least 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload and a private workspace that protects member health information.
How much do Humana nurses make in 2026?
Live October 2026 postings showed $71,100-$97,800 for a remote Utilization Management RN and a clinic-based Clinical Care Nurse, $69,500-$95,600 plus a $10,000 sign-on bonus for a CenterWell Home Health RN, and $86,300-$118,700 for a Manager, Care Management. Humana says ranges are good-faith starting estimates that vary by location and experience.
Can I use AI tools during a Humana interview?
We found no Humana candidate policy on AI tools in interviews on its careers site or in its postings, so ask your recruiter before using one in a live round, and do not use outside help on the recorded prescreen unless its instructions allow it. Our tracker of companies that allow AI in interviews explains how to ask.
Sources and verification notes
Sources checked October 2026. Humana’s careers pages, live postings (via careers.humana.com and Humana’s Workday job feed) and the FY2025 10-K were fetched directly.
