Capital One Power Day & Case Interview: Format, Math & Prep
Capital One Power Day and case interview explained: the 30-minute mini case, 2-3 full cases, break-even math, sample questions and a 3-day prep plan.
Last updated: October 2026
Quick Answer
Capital One’s Power Day is a block of back-to-back virtual interviews, and for business analyst, product and finance roles it centres on 2-3 business cases plus a behavioral round. Capital One’s own candidate pages say mini-cases run about 30 minutes and that the math is real: break-even, simple arithmetic, market sizing. Drill cases out loud in OphyAI Interview Practice, then confirm the exact rounds with your recruiter.
| Part | What it is (Capital One’s wording, or candidate-reported) |
|---|---|
| Mini case | About 30 minutes, early screen for analyst, PM and finance roles |
| Power Day | Virtual block of interviews: job fit, behavioral and case |
| Business analyst Power Day | 2-3 more cases plus a product strategy conversation |
| Tech and ML roles | Hour-long interviews on coding, system design, behavioral and a case |
What Capital One Is Testing in the Case Rounds
Capital One says case interviews gauge your strategic thinking and your analytical and quantitative skills, and that interviewers care as much about how you reach an answer as the answer itself. There is naturally more than one acceptable final answer. For the process around this round, see the Capital One interview guide.
Red flags that fail candidates, per Capital One’s advice and candidate reports:
- Reciting a consulting framework instead of doing the math.
- Not stating assumptions, so the interviewer cannot follow the numbers.
- Going silent on arithmetic instead of talking through it.
- Describing your resume during the case instead of unpacking the problem.
What to Expect
- Format: virtual, and Capital One requires candidates to stay on video for the whole interview.
- Case content: profitability, break-even, credit card or marketing-response cases are commonly reported. Candidates say interviewers give few hints if you miss the point.
- Product round: some reports describe a discussion of a digital product you like.
- Behavioral round: “Tell me about a time when” questions; use STAR.
Example Questions and How to Answer Them
1. “A card costs $60 a year to service and earns $25 interchange per cardholder. What annual fee breaks even?” State the formula first (revenue per card minus cost per card), ask whether interest income applies, then solve: $60 - $25 = $35 break-even fee before interest income. Say what you left out.
2. “A mailing reaches 500,000 people at 1% response. What is the cost per card if it cost $100,000?” 500,000 x 1% = 5,000 cards, so $100,000 / 5,000 = $20 per card. Then ask what each card earns over time to decide whether $20 is good.
3. “Should we launch a card for students?” Clarify the goal (volume or profit), size the segment, estimate response and default rates, and recommend a small pilot with a clear success metric.
4. “Tell me about a time you used data to change a decision.” Name the metric, the pushback and the outcome.
Prepare for each case type with a spoken mock in OphyAI Interview Practice, which asks follow-up questions and gives per-answer feedback.
How to Prepare in 3 Days
- Day 1: Review the credit card model (interchange, interest, fees, losses) and redo mental arithmetic with percentages and break-even.
- Day 2: Do three full cases out loud with a timer; Capital One recommends practicing aloud, ideally with a partner. Use Interview Practice for the voice mock.
- Day 3: Write 3 STAR stories about data-driven decisions and rehearse a product you like.
Use Interview Copilot only on practice calls unless your recruiter confirms the rules; Capital One’s candidate pages we found state no AI-in-interview policy, so see the tracker of companies that allow AI in interviews and ask. Start practicing →
Common Mistakes
Skipping clarifying questions. The first two minutes decide whether your math answers the right question.
Hiding assumptions. Say each number you assume and why.
Treating it like a consulting case. Capital One stresses reasoning and quantitative work over memorised frameworks.
Forgetting the recommendation. End every case with a decision, the risk and the next test.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Capital One Power Day?
A Power Day is a block of virtual interviews that follows the early screening steps. Capital One says the mix depends on the position and may include job fit, behavioral and case interviews, so ask your recruiter which of these you will face and in what order before the day.
How long is a Capital One case interview?
Capital One describes mini-cases as running about 30 minutes. Full cases in a Power Day are commonly reported as longer, but Capital One does not publish a fixed length, so ask your recruiter and plan for the timer to run out before you feel finished.
Do I need a finance background for the Capital One case?
No. Capital One says you do not need a finance background, and for some roles the case is built around publicly available Capital One products. You do need comfortable arithmetic, such as percentages, break-even and simple market sizing, and you should practice it out loud.
Can I use a calculator in the Capital One case?
Capital One does not publish a calculator rule that we found. Candidates commonly report doing arithmetic by hand, so practice without a calculator and ask the interviewer at the start what is allowed. Writing each step on paper also helps the interviewer follow your logic.
Does the Power Day differ for software engineers?
Yes. Tech roles replace most cases with technical interviews. Capital One describes AI and ML loops of four hour-long interviews covering coding, system design, behavioral questions and a case study, and says content depends on the team, so ask which team you are meeting.
