Mastercard Case Interview: Incrementality, Math & 4 Services Cases
Mastercard case interview for Services consultants: what its own prep deck says it tests, the incrementality method, 4 worked payments and retail cases.
Last updated: October 2026
Quick Answer
The Mastercard case interview is the problem-solving round for Mastercard Services consulting roles (Advisors & Consulting Services): an interviewer-guided business case “based on actual client engagements” in which, per Mastercard’s own prep deck, “there will always be a number to calculate.” The deck says its cases often skip market sizing and brain teasers. Rehearse cases out loud in OphyAI Interview Practice, then use Interview Copilot in the desktop app for real-time answer suggestions on the live case call.
| Part | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Who runs it | Advisors & Consulting Services (five specializations, incl. Business Experimentation) |
| Case length | 30-45 minutes (third-party guide) |
| Rounds | One-way video, then two live case rounds (2026 Purchase, NY report) |
| Typical prompts | Promotion, launch or remodel decisions with real math |
| Usually absent | Market sizing, brain teasers, group cases |
What Mastercard Is Testing in This Round
Whether you can find the incremental profit of a business decision, quickly and out loud. Mastercard’s “Case Interviews: An Overview” deck scores problem solving (“Are you comfortable with numbers and calculations?”), communication and impact, and professionalism and drive.
The named mechanism is the Incrementality Mentality: “compare expected performance to what would have happened if this change was not made.” Ignore what does not change (rent, baseline sales), then check five spillovers the deck names: halo effect, cannibalization, basket impact, pull forward and opportunity cost. It also warns that applying profit = revenue minus cost “too rigorously” slows candidates down. The Mastercard interview guide covers the full Services loop.
Red flags that fail candidates:
- A framework with no number at the end.
- Rebuilding the whole P&L instead of the change.
- Silent math, or math with no “so what?”
- Chasing a rabbit hole instead of driving the case.
What to Expect
Mastercard’s interview tips page calls the case “an interactive problem-solving exercise based on actual client engagements” and says every interview includes a behavioral component. Round counts below are candidate-reported.
- Flow. Clarifying questions, the core quantitative question (the bulk of the time), other factors, then a recommendation. Mastercard’s prep sheet says the interviewer “is working with you, not against you.”
- Rounds. An April 2026 Purchase, NY Associate Consultant review describes a one-way video, then two live case rounds; a Toronto review reports a case plus behavioral, then two cases and two behaviorals. For a recorded first round, One-way Interview mode in the desktop app reads each question on your screen and suggests an answer.
- Math. Paper is fine, but quick mental math on percentages, breakeven and ROI keeps the case moving.
- Data-heavy teams. For Business Experimentation (formerly Applied Predictive Technologies), a 2020 PrepLounge coach describes a dataset in Excel or SQL. Ask your recruiter.
- Behavioral. Mastercard asks for CAR (Cause-Action-Result) stories of 1-3 minutes, scored on problem solving, communication, client management, teamwork, culture and “Understanding Our Business.”
- Pay. A third-party guide using Glassdoor data puts US Associate Consultant base pay at $85K-$115K (2026 estimate).
Example Questions and How to Answer Them
Cases 1-3 come from Mastercard’s published practice materials; case 4 is illustrative.
1. “Should a store run 20% off winter coats for four weeks?”
Approach: Units double from 50 to 100 a week, price falls from $100 to $80, unit cost stays $50. The 50 coats you would have sold anyway lose $20 each (-$1,000 a week); the 50 new ones earn $30 each (+$1,500). Over four weeks that is +$2,000, minus $1,000 of signage: $1,000 incremental margin per store. Then name cannibalization, a halo on gloves and pull forward.
2. “A regional bank wants a new credit card. Which segment, and is it profitable in year one?”
Approach: Position first (the bank’s cards target Millennials, so test Gen Z and Gen X), then model per customer. Gen X: $500 fee plus 1% interchange on $24,000 of spend is $740; $200 acquisition plus 2 cents of rewards per dollar ($480) is $680, so about $60 profit. Bonus point: interchange is the issuer’s revenue, not Mastercard’s.
3. “Should a department store chain remodel its stores?”
Approach: 100,000 transactions at $50 and a 20% margin is $1M margin per store. Transactions rise 3% and ticket size 2%, adding about $50K. Staffing costs $30K a year, leaving $20K, so $105K of upfront cost pays back in about 5 years. Add opportunity cost: sales lost during construction.
4. “A bank wants to test a debit card cashback offer. How would you know it worked?”
Approach: Business Experimentation territory. Define incremental spend per cardholder, pick a matched control group, set test length, then net out reward cost and pull forward before recommending rollout.
How to Prepare in 3 Days
- Day 1: Mastercard’s own materials. Read the case deck and run the coat and remodel cases with a friend. Mastercard also links a free Forage Advisors job simulation.
- Day 2: incremental math, out loud. Drill breakeven and payback, then run two case mocks in OphyAI Interview Practice, which supports case formats with per-answer feedback. See our consulting case frameworks guide.
- Day 3: behavioral and business. Write five CAR stories, learn the four-party model, and prepare “why Mastercard Services, not a strategy firm?”
Common Mistakes
- Prepping only MBB market sizing. Mastercard says its cases often avoid it.
- Staying qualitative. Every case has a number; land it.
- Mixing up who earns what. Mastercard is the network, not the issuer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Mastercard case interview include market sizing?
Rarely, according to Mastercard. Its “Case Interviews: An Overview” deck says its cases often avoid market sizing, brain teasers and group cases, and will be quantitative. Learn the basic method anyway, but spend most of your preparation on profitability and incrementality math.
How many case interviews does Mastercard Services give?
It varies by office and level. A 2026 Purchase, NY review describes a one-way video interview followed by two live case rounds, while a Toronto review describes three cases across two rounds plus behavioral interviews. Expect two to three cases and ask your recruiter.
Is a Mastercard case interview harder than a McKinsey case?
It is usually described as less rigid. PrepLounge coaches say Mastercard cases are less structured than MBB cases, and Mastercard’s deck encourages deriving a profit formula for each situation rather than memorizing frameworks. The math is unavoidable, though: expect at least one calculation in every case.
How does OphyAI work in a Mastercard case interview?
Run case mocks in OphyAI Interview Practice, which supports case formats with follow-up questions and per-answer feedback, until the incrementality math is automatic. In the live case rounds, Interview Copilot in the desktop app hears the interviewer through system audio and suggests answers in real time, in a window excluded from screen sharing but not hidden from your webcam.
